I still need to post a celebration of Nonetheless as a whole, but on the subject of "A new bohemia", I wanted to celebrate this stanza:

Hot on the heels
of the absolute last chance
I watched them trying out
something new from France
Kamikaze eyes
locked in a trance
Improvising
a wild hypnotic dance

It's a perfectly constructed verse for me, and the scene is perfectly painted for the mind's eye. I'm trying to think of when Neil has ever crafted such visually evocative lines before. Maybe "King of Rome" comes close? I love it. I love this album.

yeah that verse is really good but for me the more iconic lyrics starts to be the chorus:

Where have they gone, les Petites Bon-Bons?
Who dances now to their sweet old song?
I wish I lived my life free-and-easier
I need to find a new bohemia

and in the end:
Where are they now?
Where have they gone?

Beautiful to me it becomes as good and memorable like lyrics from let's say I'm Not Scared:
"Tonight the streets are full of actors
I don’t know why
Oh, take these dogs away from me
before they, they bite"

For the best song on the album i voted for Loneliness but now i would change my vote for A new bohemia

Yeah I reckon this song+filmclip is the sort of thing that will pick up peoples ears for decades to come. It's so sweetly poetic, and a perfect introduction to their wider catalogue.

It's good enough for repeated radio play, even if occasional. But people will hear it I'm sure!

It's not a "Go West" Hi-NRG song, it's not got a load of synth stabs in it; it's an ageless song that could have originated from many eras and it's different from what "duh generul puhblic fink" PSB are capable of. So, actually, it will grab the attention of those outside the hardcore followers.

They're at the stage of their careers where they can go, "yeah, we're not getting hits anymore - so that's no longer a constraint. Let's release songs that we love - not songs the general public expect."

Not a bad song, not something amazing either.

I agree. I like the idea of the song and it’s got a nice melody but I wish they would have pushed the Parisian and 60s sound more. It’s very good, but in the grand scheme of songs I don’t find it as brilliant as others claim it to be. Again, the production on the final track was a let down. Much like the production on the majority of the album.

One man’s junk is another man’s treasure and all that but A New Bohemia is incredible. The sweeping strings wrapped in melancholia coupled with a perfect video, it’s quite simply the best song they’ve written since “The Way It Used To Be”.

Production wise it’s spot on. Any more flourishes and it’ll sound over produced. Always on my mind has that “over produced” sound. Perfect for its time but it makes it sound VERY 80s.

so i'm not that motivated.

it's a lot easier to extend it. which i've already done, and also make an instrumental.

I did try this but the AI tool I had really struggled with separating voice from strings so didn’t sound good enough for me. But I’m quite a perfectionist when it comes to this kind of thing.
