This topic could devolve very quickly. As it pertains to the song in question and the lyrics, I am thankful that Neil addressed a topic (which is obviously a fantasy for many, of a certain political persuasion devoid of any centrism) in an artful, tasteful and humane way by doing so from the point of view of a bodyguard or Secret Service agent and without in any way promoting such undemocratic acts of violence. He really is a fantastic lyricist and his ability to weave narratives through such sensitive and emotional topics is virtually unparalleled.

The Stephen Sondheim musical "Assasins" (which I initially avoided as my head couldn't deal with the thought of a musical on the subject of successful and failed attempts on the lives of US Presidents) is superb. If Sondheim were still with us today he would not hesitate revising the show.
Neil is probably aware of the musical, he's certainly on record as having seen Sondheim's "Follies" and "Sweeney Todd".

To me the song is about loving someone like Trump to the point they'd take a bullet for them.
It's probably written about Carol Babbitt who did just that during the Capitol Storm.
When I say love I don't mean in the romantic sense but more-so a heroic idealising way, the way someone looks up to a leader that they aspire to be like and would do anything for.
