I was informed about the "Foe" option on this site, which means you can choose not to see certain people's posts (or pointless polls) if you don't want to. Consequently I now don't see them unless I click onto them.. I highly recommend the foe option to everyone !!

Go to the foe option in your settings. You can then block out any users you wish to. I highly recommend it..

Yep, did that too. But also hard to avoid topics being created when you basically interact with "New posts" and "Active topics" sections of the forum.
