Was it just a UK thing, perhaps? Now I think about it, I don't think I ever bought a CD single in the UK. Once I got to the US, it was all jewel cases.

Cardboard CD singles were comparably most popular in the UK and Australia, I'd say. I'd never heard of any of them having protective inner sleeves until this topic, even though I own these Pet Shop Boys CD singles (I think I may have bought the reissues, new?)

Both markets also had the thin jewel cases for singles too, but these thin jewel cases were proportionally more popular in Europe.

As far as I can discern, the US seemed to use full jewel cases for CD albums and singles alike.

Cardboard sleeves were also very popular in continental Europe. The cardboard sleeves were usually used for the "single", ie the main track/single edit and maybe a B side, but often also just the single edit as a single track, especially later in the 1990s. Or for promos. The slim jewel cases were then used for the "maxi", ie the remixes, sometimes even as multiple CDs. I have several PSB CD singles where this is the case. And some US imports that indeed used standard jewel cases, but often containing all the remixes that in Europe would be spread over mutliple CD singles, probably also due to chart regulations.

I never saw those CD singles with paper inner sleeves. must have been added by some previous owner..or even by the record store that sold them, if you bought them that way at the time.

Those slim jewel cases are so flimsy. You could stare at them and they'd break.

I am almost certain that the soft inserts came from the manufacturer, i bought mine on the day of release and they all had them.. Quick check on Discogs and i found this.

Issued in a slightly oversized (13 cm x 13 cm) card sleeve with square flaps and top opening; CD housed in a dust jacket.

A virtually identical 1993 reissue can be identified by round flaps on the sleeve.

They were quite common at the time with other cd single releases too so definitely a record company and not a record store thing.

It makes complete sense to anyone looking to make a purchase for the first time. They are fast becoming the new industry standard. And it makes complete sense from a record company perspective. They are greener, and cheaper to produce and ship.

It's for people who want to buy a classic Pet Shop Boys album on CD, without extra content, in 2025. They'll be the ones you see in record shops, where I haven't seen single disc Pet Shop Boys albums for ages. This is Parlophone keeping the albums in print in up to date editions on CD. People do still buy CDs, and PSB and Parlophone would miss out on sales if casual album buyers go into record shops and only see expensive Further Listening sets.

That's exactly what I think. Thinking about paying the price of 6 CDs in which the only change is the cardboard cover I don't make sense of it, having the original CDs, further listening editions and vinyl. I doubted if there were any changes other than that cover, but if so I think I'll skip the purchase.

I have some PSB '80 cd singles with inner jacket, too. I bought them in Dublin in summer 1989, if I remember correctly.

From either Devices or Alright onwards, the discs came in standard sized square CD wallets with no inner, but some of the earlier card sleeves - certainly Heart, though weirdly I think certainly not It's A Sin - would have been too big for a disc on its own without any kind of inner. They'd have been rattling around!
