The Going Live! studio audience are so young. PSB seem so incongruous in that environment; it is crazy that they were ever a pop act in the same way that Kylie or Bros were. Neil's bald patch is advancing, he's chatting about Doris Day's upholstery and Chris looks like their funny uncle who goes raving.

Right! I thought the exact same thing. It seems really mad that just three or four years earlier they could scarcely put out a single without it going to number one; they seem so alien to it all (and I don't mean that negatively). I remember watching them on SMTV with Ant and Dec when New York City Boy came out and thinking they seemed about 800 years old but maybe they've just always been like that.

Right! I thought the exact same thing. 800 years old! - I think they've always been like that. In the 2024 BBC Imagine documentary Neil says his career in magazines and publishing meant that he was a "fully formed human" (or words to that effect) by the time he became a pop star and that no doubt adds to the sense of him being wise beyond his years or being out of sorts with those around him, even in the earliest days.

I agree how out of step they look. I recently created a playlist of top twenty hits from Nov/Dec 1988, when Left to my own devices came out. It was not a pop world they fitted into even then. Listening to all the songs back to back and you clearly see they were head and shoulders above everything else that was going on. They had an edge nobody else did.

There's a book or at least a n interesting article to be written about that awkward clash between ageing pop stars promoting their mature material to Saturday Morning kids TV shows. Pulp plugging a single called "Help The Aged" while Jarvis Cocker takes phone calls via Zoe Ball from 10 year old fans as to what his favourite pet is... "Funny how it all falls away" as a line in the aforementioned song goes...
