Track-by-Track: From Please to Nonetheless

Party song is my least favourite PSB song. It's kind of appropriate that it should be the b-side to my least favourite single, Numb. At least we got Bright young things as the second b-side.
I'd be interested to hear their cover of Smells like teen spirit, I wonder how far they got with that.

Wow this is great! Love it. Wish they had seen it through, as a remix or with Neil singing. But actually it works really well with Kurt Cobain's vocals.

Conceptually the music works great alongside Kurt's vocal - I just don't think Neil can carry a vocal convincingly enough that sticks to the same/similar tempo of the original.

As much as it was derided by Nirvana, the Tori Amos version is imho superb, but again I don't think N&C could have made it work that way either. Frankly the best way to have gone on this would have been to do an official remix.

OK, I feel like you're talking to me , so full disclosure - I don't put my domestic waste in public litter bins, BUT I have been at places (like hotels/AirBnB) where we buy "picnic" food rather than go out, and then do "garbage ninja" and put our collective crap in public waste bins. When we were in Camden to see Obscure, the day we flew back to Canada, I gave a homeless guy all of our unused food and drink (not alcohol) because I didn't want to put it in the garbage. It was all perfectly edible stuff - breads, cheese, crisps, cans of pop that we simply couldn't bring with us.

Waste from home though, definitely in a bin and collected by the binmen.

A demo of Up and Down

Better as "Up And Down", but "No Excuse" is an interesting curio nonetheless given we get to hear Neil sing other words against a slightly different arrangement.

I can just imagine the Mastermind question... "Which Pet Shop Boys deep-cut contains the lyrics 'No one dared to say when he was free and alive that Ronnie Kray was gay because they wouldn’t survive'?"

I have done a lot of research on release dates for singles dating all the way back to the early 60s, and while the exact date is sometimes lost in the mists of time, you can usually find the month of release. Not so with the limited Italian "Paninaro" release. No one appears to know, except that it was 1986. You'd think the information was available somewhere in the vaults of EMI Italia.

It was Autumn 1986 and that's the closest guess.

Anyone who owns a copy of the Italian Paninaro 12" can check, too, but if you look at the wax runout on either side it should have "2015626-A 3-11-86 I" and "2015626-F 3-11-86 I" pressed into it. Both lacquers (for my copy at least - I've only ever had one!) were prepared on 3 November 1986, and “I” identifies the first lacquer/cut. EMI Italiana normally used things such as A and B as side/master identifiers rather so you don't interpret F as meaning the sixth pressing, sixth lacquer or such like. The "I" is the part that appears to identify the first lacquer generation.

Anyway, that means we can effectively rule out the often repeated September 1986 date for the release of the Paninaro Italian 12-inch edition. The physical master from which the record was cut didn't exist until 3 November 1986.

To corroborate this, around that time the Italian EMI 12-inch of Duran Duran's Notorious has a catalogue number of 14 2015686 which is only six catalogue increments after Paninaro's (which is 14 2015626). That 12" has an EMI Italiana A-side matrix dated 6-11-86, just three days after Paninaro.

This is excellent DIY research - we can definitely narrow it down to November 1986. Now for an even harder one - the original version of One more chance.
