dVTB wrote:*sigh* For how long will this bullshit comparison continue? Every band that wants to be commercially succesful is 'manufactured' in a certain way. Yes, the Beatles dealt with publicity and promotion in a clever way. Just like approximately 99% of all other artists. Yes, the music of the Beatles is commercially milked to death, with re-releases of old hits. Just like the music of most other well-known artists.

... except for the Spice Girls, of course. Since they released just 2 proper albums and had only 10 hit singles, of which 7-8 have already been totally forgotten. But of course the Spice Girls should be hailed as song writers, since they co-wrote 'Wannabe'...
It's not a bullshit comparison at all, comparing them to Neil and Chris is. They are FAR more similar to the Spice Girls than to PSB for all the reasons I have stated i.e manager/record label having 100% creative input, based heavily on marketing, gimmicks, publicity stunts, selling sex/looks, fluffy light-weight music about nothing in particular, usually with incoherent lyrics and they both gave 100% rehearsed interviews based on managerial scripts. Google old Beatles interviews and they all sound as thick as Geri used to back in the day, if not more, until they all got too up their own arse and f*cked up on drugs, at which point they started sounding as thick as Liam Gallagher. It's a HUGE misconception that they had personalities.

PSB have always had 100% creative input on top of writing personal records a lot of the time, they never sold sex, never had ANY publicity stunt going on and they've never had Tom Watkins boss them around or dictate their interviews. PSB just are not of the same pathos and ethos as bands such as The Beatles. The Spice Girls very much were.

They just copied Elvis and Little Stevens (Lennon's own words) and later, they copied Bob Dylan. They were NEVER original musically. Their only truly ground-breaking invention was manipulating the media and that was down to their manager anyway.

Pray do tell, how exactly they did the Beatles copy Bob Dylan on Sgt Pepper?

It's really quite hilarious how so many people just accept that The Beatles were brilliant, genius , changed the world etc. without actually having looked up what was going on at the time and what was people's perception of them. You just all accept they're the best band ever JUST because you have been brought up to accept this as fact.

And? In the interview Lennon admits being influenced by Dylan's lyric writing techniques, but how does that translate into copying? A song like A Day In the Life, to name just one from Sgt Pepper, is absolutely nothing like anything Dylan has ever released.

By the same logic you could say that PSB have made their career by copying The Sparks, because they were the pivotal synth duo who also dealt in being clever and ironic.

And this is supposed to prove what? Yes, Beatles took drugs. Hold the front page indeed.

No, it proves that Paul was thick and was suffering from a severe case of personality by-pass.

PSB did copy Soft Cell in the early days.

Thank you. The voice of reason.
No, that's glennjridge.

Everyone is wrong here. The Beatles were not nearly as Spice Girly as Zeus claims, and not nearly as fantastic as everyone else claims. Their 1's best of type album contains about 4 killer songs out of 20 or so. Not that good a hit rate.

The Beatles are only remembered in such warped terms because they were the first big UK pop phenomenom of their kind. That doesn't mean they were good, or the best, it just means they were the first. Far better pop music was to follow.

PS
Everyone knows the Stones were much much better anyway.

They are only remembered because they sold more records than anyone else.

And the Stones were indeed much, much better in every way.

Who were the Stones to the Spice Girls being The Beatles? B*witched perhaps?

I don't really know many people who truthfully like the Beatles and the majority prefer Rolling Stones or Queen. Many people I know just collect Beatles material and no interest in listening to their music.

Forgive me for my ignorance too but, I haven't really heard much of the Beatles' material and what I have heard just didn't appeal to me. Scott Walker was much better than those 4 Scousers.

Still, it makes me happy that my uncle stopped the Beatles from peaking at #1 with one of their best tracks, according to critics.

Your arguments are just... very weak and some of them are simply untrue. For instance: "PSB have never sold sex". It seems like you missed a couple of video clips, including Paninaro 95 and Se A Vida E. The Beatles were considered good-looking, which they can't be blamed for. Jon Bon Jovi is also considered good-looking, which doesn't make Bon Jovi a manufactured act. Drugs use says nothing about the similarity between artists. It's just a very common thing among artists. I wouldn't call Whitney Houston and Suede similar artists.

Claiming that the Beatles manager had "100% creative input" suggests that Lennon/McCartney didn't write their own songs. Also the "depending heavily on marketing" thing is ridiculous. The Beatles depended mostly on the quality of their songs. For that reason, 1000s of other artists have covered Beatles tracks, for that reason old material by the Beatles still sells well in 2005. Why aren't Spice Girls albums selling anymore? If marketing can do the trick for you, then why aren't the Spice Girls still selling as much records as the Beatles?

Oh, since 'copying other artists' is an argument for you to qualify the Beatles as manufactured music, in the same league as the Spice Girls, this means you've just placed PSB in that same league as well.

So far for your '100% creative input' which you previously rewarded Pet Shop Boys with. PSB are just another of those awful manufactured bands, and not true musicians like Bob Dylan and Soft Cell. :?

You're contradicting yourself and you're talking nonsense.

No, I'm not, you're simply twisting my words and putting words in my mouth by using a random phrase posted as an answer to a specific topic as an arguement for something totally different.

Anyway, it's pretty pointless arguing with someone whose taste in PSB records is to the contrary of what has statistically proven to be objectively good AND who recently claimed that being gay is about something other than who you sleep with and didn't bother to elaborate. :P
