ahh, now I got it! He use the "Quote Selected" button of the Quick Reply function! Guess smileys aren't enabeled there...

When you delete the last quote caption, in then in the middle part of what you replying to, you press a smiley button, it goes to the end of the characters, not where your cursor is.

So he has, as I have just done to try it out. Smileys work, though.
