The new ipods have a battery life of about 12 hours. You will still need to get the battery replaced by Apple when it runs out. If you get the 2 year warranty (which is fairly reasonable) they will replace the battery if it is running 50% capacity or lower before the warranty is up. I've never had any problems switching headphones. It is a standard headphone socket so if you don't like the ones you get with it you can change them. You will need to get a cover or case of some sort becasue the metal back plate scratches VERY easily. But it is a marvellous device- I have put all my CD's on it, and use it all the time. I take it to work, the gym, and at home I plug it into my stereo and play it through that. You don't have to keep all the music on your PC that is on your ipod. But I would recommend saving all the mp3 onto a data cd, just in case it gets nicked, broken etc. I wouldn't like to have to convert all my music to mp3 again- it took ages the first time! If you set it to shuffle its like having your own personal radio station- you aren't sure what song will be next but you know you're going to like it!

How can different headphones drain more power.
Who ever informed you of this is wrong. the ipod kicks out the same signal no matter what is plugged into it.

Headphones do not require power to work, so the battery life will stay the same.

It seems to have become a bit of a fad at the moment to slag iPods off, particularly by people who don’t own one. They really are fabulous little things and like somebody mentioned above, it’s fantastic having thousands of songs to carry around with you. I keep mine on shuffle virtually all the time, unless I want to listen to a specific new album. One word of warning before filling it then getting rid of all your CD’s, would be that a friend of mine bought one that completely froze. He took it to the Apple store and they had to dump the memory to get it working again!
Has anybody got one of those transmitters that allow you to play it in the car using an FM signal?

it's the same with anything that's popular and hyped someone (normally with a few issues and no friends) feels the need to start a backlash. The hype about ipods in the run up to xmas did get a bit wearing and it became very much a thing to have for the sake of it (I'm sure there are some 'sheep' out there walking around with a ipod with 2 tracks on it just because it is cool and hip to own one) but so what they'll move onto the next fad and genuine music lovers will continue using their pods just because they are good. I got an Ipod shuffle two weeks ago and it's great

My Ipod also froze a few days ago. But all i did was reboot it by holding the Menu & Enter buttons for ten seconds. the ipod then goes blank and the apple logo appears. Then the menu comes back on and your off again.

Either your friends problem was different or they have been made a fool of. hope they didn't pay for the memory dump.

Ive got one of those iTrips sitting in my living room right now that a friend bought and had sent to my place to bring with because they cannot be sold in their country. Havent tried it out, but seems like a good idea! I should ask if they would mind if I tried it- doubt that would be a problem!

Can you not get them in the UK?

As far as i know you can buy them in Uk but it is illegal to use them without a license.

In the UK, if you use an iTrip you are classed as a pirate radio station

I was also on the verge of buying an iPod, but ended up deciding not to. The reason? Earbuds. I can't enjoy music through an earbud.

I'm gonna be a luddite and stick with my discman and proper headphones.

I don't get it. You can't use regular headphones with an ipod? Really? Or was this only the case in 2005?

Sounds great. I really hate iTunes dominance and been thinking iPod Touch also.
Does iPod accept aac plus.
What format should I encode as? I have a nice software that rips cds and encodes as pretty much anything, but what is the best for an iPod Touch? I'm thinking aac plus?

Do you have to use 'official' earphones? It is all these tie-ins that put me off. But WI-FI, games and music are fors.

What are the video formats?

I would definitely keep a music backup. It would take too long to rip it all again as neatly as I have organised things. I'm thinking of buying a USB drive just for this purpose. I could cope with losing the device, but not my PSB collection!

The laws I believe have been changed now. It used to be the case, but transmitters *SHOULD* be okay to use now! I could be wrong!

You definitely can! The ones that came with my iPod were awful, couldnt hear any bass at all. It was very tinny and empty. Then one ear cut out completely anyway..so I bought some Creative ones, only a few pounds off ebay for a brand new pair, and they're really good!
Personally iPods are overrated, my brother has a quite cheap mp4 player and the sound is brilliant, far better than mine...great bass.

AAC 256 kbps VBR is the new default for iTunes, and is very close to lossless quality. It's certainly much better than the same settings with MP3.
