Wow, I don't think I ever saw this thread before now. Looking at all the charts, over different years, very mixed feelings. Nostalgia, with smiles at good songs you'd forgotten, along with regret that it seems.. very long ago. Yet remembering how much pop music meant to you as a young person.

And what an amazing world pop music was then, what a dynamic and varied and idiosyncratic bunch of artists, then. Plenty of one-hit wonders, but their songs still fondly remembered. A lot wasn't very good, but a lot of it really was. It seems like some golden age compared to today. Maybe it's me getting older, but I truly do think it's not just that. Pop music is so corporatized and professionalized and it's all run through the blender. Mediocre sameness with a Hollywood veneer. It's so boring. But pop music used to be exciting, damn it. Look at those old charts- filed with dreamers and chancers and artistes and oddballs . The stakes were lower, then, to get a record out. And most of the people in the industry were high on drugs, it was a corrupt system, yet very friendly to artists. Now it's corporate, sales are measured, stars are manufactured in the Disney mode. And it's so boring.

Anyway, a very good trip down Memory Lane looking at these charts, thanks all. I feel lucky my youth had a good run of some tremendous music in the 80's and 90's. So, there's that.

Oh gosh, there are only about five tunes in that top 40 that I have no recollection of (Rene & Angela, Maria Vidal, Style Council, Shakin' Stevens and... well, I actually remember all the others). This was at the time when I had just got Sky Channel and was obsessed with it.
