12RX015 Neil

Me and Chris answer the killer question “who’s your favourite Pet Shop Boy?” by attempting to curate a complete history of “early Neil”.

From a hatred of football to a love of the theatre, In Depth gets under the skin of Neil’s childhood influences which helped shape the PSB sound and attitude.

Plus: Beatles! Bowie! Zithers and whimsy! Never-ending redundancy money! What were the key factors which informed Pet Shop Boys’ first Camden studio sessions?”

A fine episode about Neil. Well-researched! Learned one or two things. The IBS gag cracked me up and I enjoyed the doublethink at the start about who your favourite Pet Shop Boy is.

Neil is the most important pet shop boy, due to his voice and lyrics. PSB could continue with a CL replacement but not without N. Just my thoughts.

I don’t have a favourite, I’ve met them both on several occasions and they’re both so bloody cool.

"I don't have a favorite" and then you claim one of them is replaceable, what a joke. Neil has said over and over again that without Chris there's no Pet Shop Boys, period. I don't know if you're trying to be a troll or to get a reaction out of the forum, but please don't even bother.

So bearing in mind the content of the most recent episode....

(Context)
My Mum is arty (farty) and used to organise crusty and literary festivals/events and had never had any budget for hotels/accommodation so we had a succession of musicians, poets, writers, illustrators and the like in our spare room over the years.

I can't remember how the convo started last night, but was sparked off with the death of a musician she knew and got around to me going 'Wow, you know someone from The Incredible String Band, that's amazing, they're one of Neil Tennant's biggest early influences'. Then I got The Stare and was told 'Sure Robin Williamson stayed with us?'.

To this precocious little shite, I just remember him as the fella with the cool hair. All that culture was completely wasted on me.

New Episode: 12RX016 Nightlife

We set the controls to 1999 to immerse ourselves in one of Pet Shop Boys’ most polarising releases.

Echoing Nightlife’s celebration of both night owls and homebirds, Chris’s nocturnal flashbacks cover Creamfields and culottes, while Graham settles down to experience a total (solar) eclipse of the heart.

Fright wigs, goths, vampires, insomnia, early internet fandom and the small matter of a musical… all get surfaced as In Depth’s gruesome-twosome exhume the Boys’ spookiest 12-tracker.
