Back. Leg appears to be doing very well indeed after just a week. I have a probable 45 degree bend back already.

Very tired, so I think I will catch up on some sleep.

If so, then you now know my story. That's exactly what I went through in 1996/1997. The poor girl that died had been filmed in the same room I was in during this last hospital stay at the Royal Orthopaedic in Birmingham, and I have been treated by more than one of people featured in this documentary. In the old days the chemotherapy was also done at the Royal Orthopaedic, so I didn't ever have to go to the Queen Elizabeth as the patients in this did, but my original cancer type and treatment is otherwise identical - even Dr. Peake the oncologist (chemotherapy doctor) was my oncologist years ago.

Good luck and a speedy recovery. I lost complete use of my left arm from a mountain bike accident. Completely shattered my elbow, 4 months disability and 3 surgeries later it is now held together with 16 pins.

You sound like you have a nasty time ahead of you but hang in there, it will get better I promise.

Woke up this morning and the wound has bled. It had to happen on the first night out of hospital! I suspect resting up and getting the dressings changed will be enough, but it is a bit of a worry.

There's a 4 to 5cm section of the incision that has come open a bit. Must have bent my knee a little too much in my sleep. Had the dressing changed, stayed off my feet all day and the district nurse will be in again tomorrow to change the dressing again. Hoping it has improved as I can do without another stay in hospital just when I thought it was all done with!

this must be the most irritating time. right after the surgery and in the scheme of things the area is still tender and I imagine its easy to re-open the wound.
too bad they cant put the whole thing in a splint so you cant do that accidentally for a few weeks while it totaly heals.

If they did that then the healing in an immobilised joint would lead to me not being able to bend it. It's a difficult balance.

Steve is correct, having experienced similar extreme trauma in my elbow versus my knee, my elbow was immobilized for 2 months and the cart ledge reshaped around the damaged bones which lead to partial permanent loss of function of my arm. My arm finally healed okay but can not be extended full length. To Steve's point I'll always wonder if it would have healed differently and would I have full extension if it hadn't been immobilized.

ah.didnt know all this. cripes max that would be one hell of a lawsuit if there was anotherway that didnt involve losing the function of your arm.

I mean its sad in modern day when the choice is,

doctor:the good news max is your arm will heal....the bad news is you wont be able to use it anymore.

So happy to hear you're through the worst & back home. Hang in there - you've been through nastier setbacks than what you've experienced the last day or so.
