It really is good. Remember when Russell Crowe was a promising leading man and not an arsehole?
It's a good film. But it could have made for a fantastic television mini-series, HBO style. Telling the sprawling story over 12 or 14 hours instead of two. It came out just when the Sopranos was beginning to be recognized as quality drama, and a decade later, TV is where quality drama has gone, at least here. With filmic production values. LA Confidential today would probably make for a compelling series. That novel is a lot of story to pack into a single theatrical film. Oh well.
