New single „Dancing star“ (digital April 3rd / CD May 3rd)

Being so reminiscent of their classic 80's sound, is really a missed opportunity not having a Phil Harding remix of "Dancing Star."
The mixes he made for some random tracks few years ago were great, he still got the touch. So sad that Shep is out of the remixing game since many years ago...otherwise he would have been the perfect option. I need a classic extended version of it!

Not only is Dancing star a joyous throwback to their Please-era sound, the remixes by Solomun act as if they are Disco-era companions. I find myself listening avidly to the single - their best since the Pop Kids, in my book - and then devouring the remixes in much the same way I did Disco. The remixes seem almost as essential to me and bring out elements in the song that the Disco mixes did of that original clutch of classics. A potent cocktail.

Another little thrill found buried in the single is the ecstatic surge of sound just before the chorus vocals launch into the title of the track, evoking an energy-propelled leap into the skies by our celebrated protagonist. It's in the music. It's in the song...

I couldn't agree more. I am loving Dancing star...it is so damn catchy and sounds modern yet old-school all at the same time. And I love the Solomun mix and have created my own 9 minute version that mashes up the dub with the vocal, in attempt to create a proper extended mix.

Officially loving Dancing Star now... so many things to admire about it. I love the delayed pickup on the drum hits, and the guitar licks towards the end... keep noticing small details, all of which enhance the song. It strikes me that Ford is what Price never was, a judicious producer.

It's an interesting tidbit from the Brazilian interview that Neil and Chris really didn't like Nonetheless when they had it first on playback, but that Neil 'got it' when listening on AirPods in Battersea Park the next day... it is a little anecdote that suggests perhaps they really did have even-less-than-usual to do with producing the record, but it might also suggest what many of us have found with both songs thus far - that the sound, the hooks, and the message of Nonetheless are such as to grow on the listener...

It's a quiet news day... prompts me to muse as to whether we will hear any more tracks from the album prior to April 26th?

I'd also put on record that If Jesus had a sister grows on me with every listen too.

These are halcyon days for Pet Shop Boys fans, indeed.

Dancing Star is quite superb. It's in a different league to the first single, which I'm not even sure I'd ever wish to listen to again. It's also great to see the video for it is very good - Neil and Chris might be easily eligible for free bus passes nowadays, but damn they're still looking cool when they want to. There's nothing particularly highbrow going on here, of course - it's a pop song about Rudolf Nureyev - but what other pop band would make a pop song about Rudolf Nureyev then the Pet Shop Boys?! Indeed, although I knew who he was, I ended up reading a whole lot more about him the other night after listening to the song about ten times - his story could make a Spielberg thriller, couldn't it?! And for those who haven't seen it, I highly recommend you watch his Muppet Show performance with a, erm, dancing pig from 1979 or 1980. A more senior friend tells me it was 'landmark television.' RN sure had some bottle - to defect from the Soviets at the peak of the cold war on the watch of The KGB to then go and dance with an obese pig on a dubious television show... if anyone deserves a tribute song, it's Rudolf.

So far, this batch of new songs actually reflects every chapter in Pet Shop Boys' history - some duds e.g. 'Loneliness,' some Ok 'If Jesus had a sister' and some masterful 'Dancing Star,' 'Through you.'

And I think that's pretty bloody decent.

I'll offer a counterpoint. I agree that overall the 'Dancing Star' package is great, but I think that 'Loneliness' has more depth. For me, 'Dancing Star' is small but not quite perfectly formed. As many others have said, it would benefit from a bridge/middle bit/B section.
