Release? cult? What's this all about?

I think Release was something Psb needed to get out of their system. But it's understandable fans didn't like it. Imagine fans reaction if Oasis suddenly made a disco album!

I like the songs on Release ,just like most things Psb have done. Well done saving money and producing most of it themselves. It's just that the result wasn't too exciting for the ears. The videos weren't too exciting for the eyes either...you could hear the mice begging "Please don't show us on MTV!"

Hope the next package comes with extra everything.

Can we please settle this once and for all? People's problem with Release is not that it's a guitar based album. It's because the song writing is poor. I'm sure the majority of people who hate Release, love Hit And Miss (I do). So, it has nothing to do with the production and everything to do with poor songs, musically and lyrically.

No, I don't like 'Release' for being
a guitar based + 'slow' album. Image

Oh sure. TFF became a muso band - which is exactly what PSB was aiming for with Release. Hell, they even appeared on the musician credits in the liner notes for the first time ever.
While you dismiss TFF's muso phase as crap, to most people 'The seeds of love' is still a fantastic album all those years later.

On the other hand, Release turned out to be a mediocre collection of songs, most of which wouldn't have ever stood a chance to be on any other PSB album.

Not even Disco 2.

Is it really? I admit that many will tap their fingers to Sowing The Seeds Of love, if they hear it on the radio, but the rest of the album? Who admits loving Badman's Song or Standing On the Corner of The Third World? Who besides a hardcore TFF fan can even name one of the other singles than Sowing...? Seeds Of Love sold well in the beginning because of Sowing and the hype, but the sales dropped almost immediately, never getting even close to The Big Chair, which to me is in a different league as an album.

I don't think PSB wanted to become a muso band with Release. Sure you can accuse them of wanting to become a MOR radio favourite with it, but I see their idea was to make a more intimate and song-based, more grown-up and sober album, after the excesses of CTH and Nightlife. Whether they succeeded or not, our opinion differs on that one, but at least they didn't rope in half the session musicians of the world and try to make a theme album of 6-minute songs of how love will save the world.

Eldritch, many people could name Woman In Chains, wasn't that on Sowing The Seeds Of Love?

I don't understand how Release was more 'song-based' considering it has not tunes! And I don't understand how CTH and Nightlife were 'excessive' considering half of the tracks there are mid-tempo or ballads.

Can they really? Definitely not as many people who could name Shout, Everybody Wants To Rule The World or Head Over Heels, which were all on Big Chair.

I really like Advice For The Young At Heart though. And Orzabal's solo album from 2000 had some surprisingly good songs, but other than that I don't really like anything by TFF post-85.

I don't like TFF, personally. Shout, Everybody Wants To Rule The World and Mad World, I suppose I like as 80's classics and because I've heard them so many times but I don't really rate them. I think Woman In Chains is pretty well-known, yeah, at least more so than Badman Song and Advice For The Young At Heart.

Because I have a thing for early eighties angst-y synth-pop I really like The Hurting and the singles (including Mothers Talk) from Big Chair, but that's about it for me really.

Admit it, we always criticise Release because of its guitar sounds, slowness or how they terribly re-made Oasis songs but actually a causal music fan who does not give a damn about PSB or synth-music finds Release a solid piece of work- Releasi is something like university youth likes nowadays- very-much like Oasis offerings.

And I don't believe PSB had to get it out of their system- when did you hear Neil or Chris talk about "they always wanted to make a rock album?" They decided to do so because only Nightlife flopped beyond expectations and it was clear that trade mark PSB sounds and overproduction with strings and keyboards were gettin very thin. And because Boys are among the most clever workers in the music industry, they immediately saw that and tried to be in tune with times. Actually it is a very clever turn- but PSB were already history so those ones who could appreciate Release were only the core fans but they did not- if Release was released before nightlife or even around bilingual area it would be very popular among mainstream listeners- but after Nightlife there were too few mainstream buyers to care for what PSB released whether it was a gospel or cha-cha album

That's why it is more popular than Nightlife in USA- and among rock music listeners
The CELL by Stephen King instantly hit number 1 in New York Times Bookseller Lists selling well over 200 thousand copies in three weeks. This affirms my opinion: People really need an occassional good horror read...
