Track-by-Track: From Please to Nonetheless
Re: Track-by-Track: From Please to Nonetheless
Tonight is Forever
‘If they’ve put all the hits on side a, then I bet the rest of the album is going to be a bit of a disappointment’
Of course I was wrong !
The first track proper on ‘side b’ follows the same classic PSB song format as the first track on ‘side a’, 3 fab verses and a killer chorus, in an album full of them !
I think this was considered to be a possible single release, if my memory serves me right (8/10)

I've listened to it twice and I clearly haven't got yours and MikeyC's musical ears as I'm not getting it !Sandy Shaw wrote: Fri 22 Mar 2024, 2:11 pmThe killer chorus owes some of its melody to another tune...Pinhead44 wrote: Thu 21 Mar 2024, 8:32 pm Suburbia
Take one killer chorus, add a stunning keyboard melody and an awesome baseline, and what do you get? The boys back in the top 10 of the UK charts where they rightly belong !
Unfortunately for Please, the amazing re-work that became the single release isn’t on here, and after the shiny production of the previous 3 songs on the album, the music today sounds a little dated, and closer to a demo, although I used to love that about it when I was younger.
My eldest son’s favourite PSB song, and I recently introduced him to the wonder of the Full Horror. (8/10)

Great song though !

Always loved the second side of Please, even if all the singles are on Side A, which shows what a fantastic album it is. This is the first of a suite of songs about clubbing, f*cking, fighting and loving. Everything on Please was experienced viscerally as you listened to it on your Walkman - that build-up at the start of Tonight is forever is still thrilling to hear all these years later. My teenage self still feels like they're in the centre of the city at 3am even while being tucked up safely under the duvet, listening on headphones. I'm almost in agreement with Zeus on the Loose that this is their best album, but still carry the torch for Behaviour because I'm a wuss.

My younger me always thought the b-side was rather meh and the a-side was where the bangers were. It took a few years to realize there's really no filler on this album and it's all top quality tracks!

No discussion opportunity for Opportunities (Reprise) then? It's not much for sure, but hardly ever spoken about and this was one more chance. Was it meant as an intermission, is it a mistake to be on the album and the only weak spot? Has anyone ever fan mixed it back into the track it was cut from?
And at the end/ Your funny Uncle staring / At all your friends / With military bearing

It's from the first 12" mix, so it's already mixed back in.Old Soak wrote: Sat 23 Mar 2024, 10:07 am No discussion opportunity for Opportunities (Reprise) then? You are correct, it is rather confusing, I just checked the 12" version on Further Listening which didn't seem to have it. Then there's a longer version which has a the track mixed in with extra instruments (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unY8bdrbK7I four minutes in) And there's Opportunities (Dub For Money) and that has a slightly different version of that segment (more echoes).

Isn't this 8-minute version a fanmade mix?leesmapman wrote: Sat 23 Mar 2024, 3:28 pmYou are correct, it is rather confusing, I just checked the 12" version on Further Listening which didn't seem to have it. The original 12'' is 7 minutes long and the Dance mix is 6:45.

Actually it was a part of original 7-inch version. And it's on Further Listening bonus CD as a part of "Full Length 7'' Mix" (track 2).leesmapman wrote: Sat 23 Mar 2024, 3:28 pm You are correct, it is rather confusing, I just checked the 12" version on Further Listening which didn't seem to have it. It's written in FL booklet.

Track 7: Violence
Chronology: Please, Track 8
Neil's vocal is lovely on this track ! The music on the Please version has always been a bit disappointing for me though, although that was corrected on the fabulous reworked Hacienda version that was later released. (6/10)

It's not part of the original 7" version (the version in the original 1985 video), but, as you say, it is part of the 'Full Length 7" Mix' on the 'Please' Further Listening.Wish wrote: Sat 23 Mar 2024, 7:18 pmActually it was a part of original 7-inch version. I mean it was edited out of Original 7-inch version. Not 12-inch. And it's written in FL booklet

This was the only dip for me on Please. I loved every other track except this one. However, the sentiment was not lost on me.Pinhead44 wrote: Sat 23 Mar 2024, 7:51 pm Violence
