Eén van de in Nederland meest onderschatte singer-songwriters, de Pet Shop Boys,
hebben weer een album aan hun indrukwekkende discografie toegevoegd. Een discografie
die geen echt zwak punt bevat, al zijn de fans nooit blij geweest met het vrij
ingetogen Release (met Johnny Marr on guitar). Deze fans zijn al bij voorbaat blij
met Fundamental want de Boys zijn teruggekeerd naar hun synthipop-roots (denk "It's
a sin"). Samen met Trevor Horn, die de overdonderende productie heeft verzorgd. Het
album staat vol met Perfecte Popliedjes zoals je die zelden aantreft op popalbums
(die meestal bestaan uit 3 singles en 9 fillers). "I'm with stupid", de eerste
single, is inmiddels de 21e toptien hit van de Boys in Engeland. In Nederland zullen
ze altijd "de homo's van Go West en West End Girls" blijven, daar verandert een
positieve recensie als die in de OOR van deze maand ("pop van het hoogste niveau")
niets aan. Maar "Britain's greatest pop group" (Q van deze maand) zal daar niet
wakker van liggen. De liefhebbers van übercatchy melodieën en vlijmscherpe, intelligente
teksten zullen Fundamental toch wel weten te vinden en er zijn genoeg liefhebbers
om de Boys van een verdiend royaal inkomen te voorzien. Gelukkig maar. Pet Shop

In the Netherlands they probably will still be known as the gays of Go West and West End Girls, a positive review in OOR this month ("popmusic of the highest level") won't change anything about that. But "Britain's greatest pop group" (this month's Q) won't sleep less about that. People who love uebercatchy melodies and intelligent sharp-as-a-knife lyrics will find Fundamental and there are plenty of people who love the Boys that they can earn a royal income. And that's good.
