In this doco, Neil says the homo-erotic elements in the Domino Dancing filmclip were unintentional.

Do you think that's true? The boys relection in Chis' sunglasses (at night) at the end of the clip does seem a bit suggestive!

I would have thought that the overall story and direction for the Domino dancing video would have been from Eric Watson. Too bad he wasn't interviewed for the documentary, as it would have been interesting to hear his answer.

Eric Watson's story can be heard on the 1991 South Bank show.

From what I understand, the torrent-version is a mini-docu, whereas the DVD will contain the extended/full version.

One thing I did not like in Life in Pop was a comment made about Closer To Heaven... "The things that were wrong with the musical were not necessarily things that the Pet Shop Boys were responsible for"

Which, of course, throws the blame over to Jonathan Harvey. The comment was not made by Neil or Chris, but the fact that it was included bugs me a little.

It's not a hugely attacking statement, but I would have respected them more if they chose to omit comments like that and focus on the positive.

Then again, Jonathan Harvey apparently said to the Daily Tel "It was the worst experience of my career"..... although I've never been able to find that article!

Interesting comment... I think it's good A Life In Pop isn't 100% positive about every single thing that the PSB have ever done (that wouldn't have been realistic). Every artist has successes and falliures. Closer To Heaven, while not a falliure, was not the big success that everyone was hoping for. Neil and Chris are too diplomatic to really analyze what went wrong with the musical, so I think it's good that someone in the film attempts to explain a viewpoint of what went wrong.

By the way, did Jonathan Harvey explain to the Daily Telegraph why it was the worst experience of his career?

Haven't read the Jonathan Harvey article, just know the quote.

I'm ok with them having failures in their career and talking about it. I just feel that including that comment was like a slap at Jonathan Harvey. It seems like (or comes across as) stubburness on PSBs part.

Similarly, Chris' comments on albums that recieved poor reviews. He says that later on reviewers change their minds... I mean, heaven forbid PSB ever release a dud album!

OK, maybe this is nit picking, but I just respect people more if they can call a spade a spade without shirking or deflecting onto other people.

"The musical was a failure but it wasn't our fault" is a bit rich to be putting in their biographical DVD !

But anyway, still love 'em.

My understanding is that Pet Shop Boys blame the marketing of the musical and think that's why it was a failure - which is more a swipe at The Really Useful Group. I've never heard about them blaming Jonathan Harvey.

Ah, ok... blaming JH was my interpretation.... but you're right, they may have been referencing Really Useful.
