The real story behind Absolutely Fabulous

#1 Post by patrick »

Neil and Chris signed today at Virgin Sunset. The line was surprisingly long but moved fairly quickly. They seemed in much better spirits than the Tower Records signing a few years ago for the Nightlife Tour - very friendly and chatty.

As we all know, there's a burning issue that defines everything about these modern times. No, not Iraq. The status of Absolutely Fabulous. To be honest I wasn't expecting the answer:

PSB don't own it. Comic Relief does!

They have to license the song and simply chose not to do so for PopArt because a greatest hits package would have been much more expensive than a bonus track on an archive album re-issue. Simple as that. So not some swot with a chart book, not BBC rights conflict with the Absolutely fabulous samples. It's a part of their past but not their present.

Maybe now we can all move on.

I didn't think it was included on any of their Further listenings... Am I forgetting?

I think it was on the Very FL but the license fee for an archive issue with minimal sales expectations is going to be far less than a global Greatest Hits CD/DVD package.

So kind of it´s not a PSB song. It´s a Comic Relief-song ?

It's sounds like crappy disco, great it wasn't part of POP ART.

Of course it's a PSB song. Did you know Paul McCartney doesn't own all the Beatles' material?

Errrr... I was the one who said Absolutely fabulous is technically not a PSB single. And that's 100 percent correct. :P

But I will quit about it. Some people think that I sleep bad at night or that I suicidal because of this Absolutely fabulous issue. Truth is: I didn't even raise the topic, just took part in a (heated) discussion about it. But that's what a discussion forum is meant for.

No harm done. I will gladly admit that I also didn't have the faintest idea about this rights issue. Thanks for getting that solved.

No, it's not. The remaining Beatles can't just release any old Beatles material, but that doesn't make it "technically not Beatles singles."
