Idea: PSB news - delivered via SMS

#1 Post by Very »

I'm thinking of making a service with PSB news delivered via SMS: fans register and get weekly SMS news about PSB. I'm trying to find a good method to run this cheap... for the moment is a concept but if anyone is interested to join this project let me know. Or at least if you like the idea let me know.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

Is it easy to send SMS's all around the world?

yes, it's easy. but it costs some money. for example for $1 you could receive around 8-10 sms messages monthly.

I too was thinking of doing something like this recently. It's a good idea that has the potential to work :)

Sending news via SMS is so 90s. Also, the price for sending SMSs at a bulk price is perhaps 3-4c/message - while not much is too much at some point if no sponsors are found. Make a service & mobile client - data based services so much richer and rewarding.

It's not something I would subscribe to, sorry. I can check my PSB news on internet every day, and I can't think of something that's so shocking or urgent that I need to find out about it within seconds. After all, the SMS'es are mainly going to feature news that's already online...

just had a short chat with Chris Dahl from psb-online.com and he said, it's too expensive to run such a thing. The costs for it (in Germany) are too high, cause you need around 8000 people, who sign to such a project and bring you the costs back you need, if you want to send the fans every PSB news - you put on your site.
He also was telling me, that he only had around 10 or 20 people, who signed when he put up his service two years ago...

Can't speak about the costs in other countries...

well... the real costs would be $1 per user for 8-10 sms messages per month... and there are no min. users needed. the only problem is if people would pay for this or if we should try to find sponsors... and a WAP site with PSB news accessible from any mobile... this idea also crossed my mind..

and thats maybe the thing! It should be very hard to find people who really will pay money for a news, they easily can get through the www, so maybe step 2:

I currently plan to make this forum viewable for poketPCs or mobiles in an easier way. Assume the software should be ready around April 1st. All pics will removed and you simply will have a 'reading/writing mode' where you easily can browse through the topics here if you are connected via your mobile or pocketPC.

But that wasn't the question I think! Maybe it's a way to find sponsors...but is it worth it??? How many people will sign the service???

There sure are ways to find sponsors, but we also need a proper number of users... we may reach 50+ probably... but would it be enough? ...

Is there really enough PSB news to make any effort like this worth while? Not to rain on anybody's parade, but except for the occasional media appearance, what info is there that needs to get out that isn't already up on one of the web sites?
