I think it's good that I can see what the members look like and that people can see me. It makes the internet feel more friendly and less faceless - quite literally.

I can understand that some may not want people to know what they look like, but it doesn't bother me.

i used to have mine, now its the signed bot. i think its nice to have a photo as avatar, like fugitive said, it makes the board a little more personal

Mine is. Just was wearing a white hood, and took the photo with a white background... and changed the photo a bit ^^

At the bottom of the profile edit page, there is an option "upload avatarfrom your machine". along from that is "browse", click on that. you can know select a picture from your computer to upload, but make sure it is no bigger than 15k and 100x100 pixels in size. you can resize your pictures with your photo editing software if the one you want to use is too big.
