Lackage of idol

Sorry for another topic, but my brain is mossy. Every decade seemed to have a big star; 50's was Presley or Sinatra, 60's The Beatles, 70's Elton John, 80's Michael Jackson or Madonna, but from then on there was no longer THE artist everyone liked. Nirvana was big in the 90's, but there was a segregation in place by then. People liked rap, pop, or rock, but unfortunately genre crossing became less common-place. Do you think it's because there is too much choice now, or because there has been noone good enough since. And what do you reckon the consequences will be? Do we need a common artist everyone is into? I mean, U2 and Timberlake are at their respective peaks in rock and pop, but they have sort of apathetic general support, and certainly aren't revolutionizing anything. Anywho, thoughts?

I think its because there is such a high turnover rate for new artists. record lables essencially just churn stuff out and dont spend any time nurturing new artists for long term usage unless they are super smashes out of the starting gate on the charts.

so what happens is alot of artists music becomes like comets or shooting stars, it comes out burns bright for a moment and then fades away.
