Did you know this little anecdote from TOTP and PSB?

#1 Post by nickname » Sat 09 Nov 2019, 3:46 pm

The end of 1988 was marked by a special 70-minute edition of the show broadcast on 31 December 1988, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first show. The pre-recorded programme featured the return of the original four presenters (Savile, Freeman, Murray and Jacobs) as well as numerous presenters from the show's history, anchored by Paul Gambaccini and Mike Read. Numerous clips from the history of the show were included in between acts performing in the studio, which included Cliff Richard, Engelbert Humperdinck, Lulu, the Four Tops, David Essex, Mud, Status Quo, Shakin' Stevens, the Tremeloes and from the very first edition, the Swinging Blue Jeans. Sandie Shaw, the Pet Shop Boys and Wet Wet Wet were billed in the Radio Times to appear, but none featured in the show other than Shaw in compilation clips.

It was a very little anecdote but thank you very much nickname. I have a similarly fun anecdote about spending twenty minutes trying to find the Bilingual tracklisting on the cassette inlay before I finally discovered it was on the spine. What hijinks!

Oooh, Hijinks, that would be a good album title.

Sounds like a misprint in the Radio Times - PSB and Wet Wet Wet were at that point a mainstay for the show, so maybe someone at Radio Times just assumed they'd be a part of it.

The show itself sounds more like a retrospective of its earlier years based on the guests and the presenters, and doesn't sound overly entertaining, so maybe even possible that PSB and Wet Wet Wet were asked and declined to be involved. The less said about Savile's involvement the better.
