I think retro box set is the best way for New Order compilation, I think Best of is like retro but retro has the mix cd and a live cd. I pick retro, but i like to see your opinions here too

Retro is, in deed, the most complete one.

However you can also buy "The best of" and "The rest of"... many surprises on those...

I said this at the time but am I the only one who still thinks that the 'Retro' box-set was dreadful?

no agree with you - it wasn't dreadful in terms of the music (although I could live without the live disc) just in terms of a missed opportunity to release some of their rarest tracks - not much thought seemed to go into it -the booklet wasn't that hot either

It was very frustrating indeed. Because different persons had compiled the tracklisting for different cd's, there were some serious omissions and too much overlapping. I mean: we got Fine Time, Crystal and Regret three times, but classic tracks like Vanishing Point, Love Vigilantes, Subculture, Mr Disco, Ruined In A Day etc. are omitted. And when adds the lack of proper rarities, the whole 4-cd package plus the hastily thrown in bonus disc is really a missed opportunity.

Substance is by far the best New Order compilation so far.

Some copies had a bonus disc, because New Order fans had complained about the lack of rarities. I ordered my copy from the Amazon and was surprised to receive one - because I didn't even know one existed. The tracklisting is:

Temptation ´96
Transmission (live)
Such A Good thing
Theme from best & March
Let's G
True Noise (Pink Noise Morel edit)
Run Wild (original mix)
The Perfect Kiss (live)
Elegia (full version) - this is the true gem of the bonus disc, it's about 17 minutes long!

Does the sleeve mention that bonus disc at all? I'm asking becuz I saw Retro in a shop here and the sleeve surely didn't say anything about it having a bonus disc...

No it doesn't. And it has no place in the overall design - it just falls out when one opens the box. The cd is in a thin cardboard sleeve that has the same bird's head on the cover that the box set has in its cover. According to some reports, it was a last minute addition to the box, because so many fans had complained about the track listing to the box set. Don't even know if all of the copies have it.

I Did not know substance was a compilation, thought it was an album.

Damn, it seems that NO has as much compilation/album/ep ratio to album as the PSB does.

Where did you buy it? From a Finnish record store? Like I said, I pre-ordered mine form amazon.co.uk.

Weirdalfan, Substance is indeed a compilation that includes all New Order a- and (most) b-sides up until True Faith.

I have the 5 CD version. Took me weeks to find one!

I think the box set is great. With 5 (or 4) discs you're never going to please everyone. What does the booklet say? IIRC - they wanted to release every track they'd ever done, then realised it would take 50 CD's!
