CURRENT ESTIMATE FOR RECORD SALES

#1 Post by NOBODY75 »

Because of Taylor Swift's new video, I read an article saying that in the US, YouTube views will no longer count towards the singles chart starting in January 2026. I always thought it was ridiculous that they counted them. Out of curiosity, I looked up what equivalency they used. Surprised, I looked up Spotify's; I didn't put much effort into it, I just asked the AI. Since the data caught my attention, I tried applying this to West End Girls, and it showed that adding YouTube views and Spotify streams gave me the equivalent of 3 million singles. Then I looked at Blinding Lights, and I'm not sure if it came to more than 30 or 40 million. Does anyone really know if this is how it works? For example, if West End Girls sold 3 million physical copies at the time (I don't know the exact figure), the official historical total would now be 6 million... Is this how it works?

Just wish they’d separate the steams from actual sales and Downloads and just use the sales and downloads as the official chart. That way, all the record companies should actually make physical copies.

times have changed.

people don't listen to music like they used to.

doing chart comparisons now, to old ones doesn't make any sense.

and trying to update sales figures is a lost cause.

only people that care about charts try to work the numbers in their favor.

its ridiculous for the top 10 to be the same artist, etc, more number ones that old groups, etc.

i gave up on charts in the 90s and have never looked back.
