Anyone on here a fan/was a fan of Carter USM? I'm thinking of getting 30 Something on CD (only have it on vinyl). I wonder how well its aged?

I'm not really familiar with them , but I think that "Born On the 5th Of November" is a gorgeous track , a Rock masterpiece . Shame it only reached #35 in the UK

Carter usm are excellent. They did a mad version of Rent which i heard live once. Best album to get on cd is 1992 the love album. 30 somethin is good and includes the excellent surfin usm and say it with flowers(what a great live song!) They've split now and are in different bands but still tour together. Jim bobs band are Jims super stereoworld and fruitbats is....crap i forget. Worth a look still sound good today.

Carter USM are OK, but JimBob's solo albums are actually much better. Strongly recommended (though quite unlike Carter USM).

I was quite a big fan in the 90s but haven't listened to them since. I really enjoyed all their albums through Worry Bomb. They were also a great b-sides band many of which were excellent cover versions. They relied heavily on humor (almost in the same way many rap artists do) so there was a strong novelty element to much of their work.

I was in to them when I was at school. They were even briefly imperial with The Only Living Boy in New Cross.

It's sad that a group like Carter USM would never have a hit these days.

Actually you've got SL2, The Sisters of Mercy, Marc Almond and Carter USM in the top ten there. Wow. Oh and that Ten Sharp song too which is your classic one hit wonder.

30 Something is still a great albums - Billy's Smart Circus is still a repeatable song. 1992 is worth checking out again, but their best song ever was The Only Living Boy in New Cross. Having said that Worry Bomb is a pretty good album.

They're my favourite band, and have been since 1994, when I decided that they even better than (shock! horror!)... Pet Shop Boys, who had been my faves since 1988.

I really don't know where to start, but in 2007 when Carter announced their first set of reunion shows, I travelled from Melbourne to the U.K. to see them perform live. Seeing them on my 30th birthday, in my 30 Something t-shirt, front and centre at Brixton Academy was something very special.



So I suppose in summary, I'd say they're so good that I'd travel to the other side of the world to see them. Thankfully my wife likes them too (in fact, we met on an old Carter website guestbook back in 1996), so I managed to get my son's middle name to be Carter.

Nice also that Fruitbat travels to this side of the world every year or two to play gigs with his band, Abdoujaparov. It means I've got to see him many times, had him come to my wedding, he's played a DJ set at an indie night I used to run, and I've had him and his bandmates around for dinner several times etc.

And Kiran ~ if you are thinking of getting 30 Something, try to hold on a little bit, because a 2CD remastered edition is coming very shortly. As for how well it's aged, well... it's the best album ever and will sound even better remastered.

It's got some great b-sides, and it's also got After The Watershed on the main disc... this track was originally intended to appear on the album upon its original release, but got cut on account of the copyright kerfuffle with the Rolling Stones over the use of the words "Goodbye Ruby Tuesday". Thankfully wiser heads now prevail and it appears where it belonged 20 years ago.
