How in holy hell does the 4th ranked team in the world, unbeaten for 2 years, constitute a surprise package?

Oh well, the crazy world of GalataPSB.

Most of football watchers can count 4-5 names from England/Brasil/Argentina/Germany/Italy/France football teams. And these teams were favourites pre world cup. I don't think many people can count 1-2 names from The Netherlands football team. They played very good. They deserved to play the final match. But It wasn't favourite of many people.

Eh? What? Well there are three Champions league finalists in Wesley Sneijder of Internazionale, Arjen Robben and Mark Van Bommel of Bayern Munich. Then there's Robin Van Persie of Arsenal, Rafael Van der Vaart of Real Madrid, Dirk Kuyt of Liverpool... That's six big players at big clubs... As to them not being favourites against Brazil or Spain... Well one of those teams was BRAZIL and the other were the current European Champions!

Not big names? Your idea of a big name is obviously different to mine. Three of them have been at Real Madrid! Real never sign players that aren't big names!

I wouldn't have put the Dutch at the top of my list of favourites, which probably would have been Spain, Brazil and Argentina but I'd have had them down for at least the quarter-finals. Going on form I'd have put them above Germany and England for sure.

When i compared the names in the team with the 'big names' in 1980s 1990s" Van Basten, Gulit, Rijkaard, Koeman,Bergkamp(?), Overmars, Kluivert Deboer Brothers, They are not 'big names'...

+

Your 3 favs were Spain Brasil and Argentina , not The Netherlands.
My 3 favs were Brasil, Germany and Spain, not The Netherlands.

Erm England qualifyed for the énd phase and were ranked 13th in the world cup so that hardly makes them one of the worst teams!
And quite how you left off your list the defeats of Spain, Germany and Italy in the group stages God only knows.
But we all know your bent mentality so no suprise.

Sorry Galata, you have a lot wrong here. You have omitted the three most surprising results ;-

Slovakia 3-2 Italy
Netherlands 2-1 Brazil
Spain 0-1 Swiss

Like YFU said, the Netherlands (oh i hate calling them that) have several top players in their squad. They were 4th or 5th favourites to win the World Cup. Not sure where you are coming from with some of these comments.

Not for me!

Slovakia and Italy were favourite teams in Group F (?).The result wasn't surprise For me!
Netherlands 2 Brasil 1. That's why I said The Netherlands was the surprise team of the world cup.I ve already added it to 'Interesting events' section in my list.I didnt want to put it under ' Surprising results' category
Spain 0 - 1 Swiss - Switzerland football team is a very good team. They have an amazing defense, but they just need some quality offense. And spain was unlucky. Not a surprise result for me!

What were your fav top 5 teams pre world cup, Dave?

For me

1 - Brazil
2 - Germany
3 - Spain
4 - Italy
5 - Argentina

* Note : I am not against The Netherlands football team. the Netherlands is a very good team. They played better than many teams. They deserved to play the final match. But It wasn't favourite pre-matches!

* Note : It is my list. You can agree / disagree...
