By 1999 PSB were a fanbase act with the briefest of soujourns in the chart. The chart run of the elegiac I Don't Know What..... was 15-38-57. Entering a place below J-Lo's generously-proportioned posterior was indicative of late 1990s PSB; generally unloved by the hoi polloi, their appearance as the Samurai in Autumn on TOTP alongside the likes of perma-grinning buffoons Steps and all-singing all-dancing circus troupe S Club 7 was strangely unnerving, like Kurosawa meets the Power Rangers. Lots of crap here but still plenty of variety too; Blur's excellent Coffee and TV, huge dance hits like ATB and Alice Deejay, Madness's last ever top ten hit, and Victorin's idol Adam Rickitt.

Ahhh....The disappointment of I don't know what you want but I can't give it any more charting at a lowly number 15. Reminds of the Dotmusic days when we had Mike Fiorenza championing their next single - New York City - as the greatest piece of music ever created. And then we heard the damn thing. Oh dear.

The anticipation of that first play was palpable. However, in the end it was a little underwhelming as Zoe Ball murmured about how depressing it sounded after that initial first play; she was right of course, it was a wonderfully danceable but ultimately depressing slice of melancholia and perhaps not the ideal choice for a leading single. Still, at least it wasn't New York city boy.

There were quite a few massive singles above I don't know what you want but I can't give it any more that week. With New York city boy not making the top ten either, this was the era i thought PSB had lost it and would never have another top ten hit or top ten album again. Their time was nigh.

Yeah, I'm Canadian. I live in London, Ontario. Len was from Toronto. My friend was the drummer for Len when they were an indie/alternative band. He left the band (amicably) when they decided to go hip-hop (i.e. when Steal My Sunshine came out). He got a little $$$ out of it, though.
