And on that high point I say goodbye to the Pet Shop Boys community. Thank you.

Clearly attempting to trump The Roxy, Batesey bends the truth and says that the PSBs are live in the studio. Yes, live in the studio last week, you preposterous man!

I just watched tonight's edition. I didn't notice before that it's a different edit to last weeks performance. Obviously filmed together but different camera angles, audience and backdrop. Always assumed they'd only filmed one 'Sin' on this date until The Christmas TOTP appearance.

Neil was smirking at the beginning

I thought Chris told him not to look triumphant?

They did 2 completely separate performances of Its a Sin in June/July 1987, filmed 1 week apart with completely different sets.

This was the first week when it debuted at number 5 on the 25th June edition:-

Then the following week when it got to number 1 they performed it again on the 2nd July edition:-

The 2nd of July performance was then repeated on the 9th July edition. It’s not a different performance, just a repeat. The 25th June & 2nd July performances were not filmed on the same day but 1 week apart, which was standard practice. Multiple performances with different sets, audiences and camera shots never happened on the same day for any act appearing on TOTP. Any act only recorded a new performance at least a week later - if it had climbed the chart.

So in total they played it 3 times - 25th June, 2nd July, 25th December.

That’s because that’s the clothing/image they wore for the promotion. They wore the same clothes when they performed it on The Roxy:-

Rewatching these early Top of the Pops, you realise again how completely different PSB were from the other acts of the time ... and how Neil was incredible at working the camera and making the most of those close-ups that TOTP loved to use to build a connection with the audience, all while doing very little.

Technical error with the playout file according to BBC4 controller. Was briefly on iPlayer through SkyHD but it’s been removed now I believe - but not before I downloaded and watched it. Good episode. Apparently might be shown tonight but it’s still scheduled for late Saturday night.

Speaking of the Imperial Phase, The TV channel Drama are currently showing episodes of Classic EastEnders, which originally aired during the Imperial Phase. So pretty much everyday you’re guaranteed to hear a bit of PSB playing in the background of the Queen Vic. Every single up to Heart has had regular plays
Highlights from this weeks episodes
Ian Beale announcing the latest hit from the Pet Shop Boys, whilst Djing at a kids Disco.
I’m not Scared, being played on the radio at the cafe.
A couple having a slow dance to Later Tonight, at someone’s birthday party.
