Well, that's true, this is an amazing album!
Very good compositions, let me be clear about that.
I just cringe, (being a producer myself), when I hear cheap sounds being used while there's no legit reason whatsoever for them doing so. They have tons of equipment/studio's available to them, so what gives...?

I know what you mean. I compose also music with synths and Mac ( Logic ).
I had used real horns and other drumsounds when they were available. It sounds sometimes a little like demo-music and it's strange to hear that. But demo-music is pure and maybe they had a chance with this album to go back to the roots : strings with old synthsounds. I think they like this sounds and couldn't leave them.

There is a difference between 'analogue' sounds, (I guess that's what you meant), and cheap General Midi-sounds. There's nothing about the latter to be said in the positive sense for using them in this otherwise lush-sounding, rich production.
General Midi-presets are not classics, they are an ear-sore, only fabricated to swap Midi-files, so they kinda sound the same through whatever GM-player you hear them.
Really, there is no excuse using these sounds in big productions!

I've only listened to the album twice - three times. On the whole I found it quite underwhelming. Am I the only one?

No I mean that a synth-horn from the eighties sounds like a general-midi at this moment. The analogue sounds from the eighties sounds good in every production today. But you are right.
Maybe the reason why they do that is the easyest way to make a score from more than one hour nonstop ???
But these are the only disadvantages I found in this album.

Well, to be honest, that is an adequate solution for a live-show. But since this is recorded in a studio... OUT with that argument!
I wouldn't want to be found dead with a General-Midi trumpet on one of my albums!
But you are right, that (and the snares!) is the ony downer to be heard on this album!

I think they didn't want the soundtrack for a 1920's film to sound too modern, so they put some old/bad arrangements for a retro-futurist feeling.

Personally I can't be arsed whether the horn sound is a midi-sample or a genuine one. The tracks sound great, especially To The Shore. I love the horn in it, sounding almost like some AIR tracks. Brilliant stuff.
