That reminds me of the great David Mitchell (of Mitchell and Webb). Having a conversation that went like this (approximately)

Mitchell: "Well there were lots around when when I was at school"

Mitchell: "Yes at least half the masters...

Albums don't sell anymore unless you are Adele or a Disney movie soundtrack..

Remember that there is no tour, no festivals, no tv shows, so they will sell more when they will tour around Europe, for example. Let's see what will happen with Adele when she will be 61.

Going back to including streaming in the charts - it's daft. I buy a Pet Shop Boys CD and it counts towards the chart for that week. I play it ten times a day for the next six weeks and it doesn't count towards the chart. Someone else never buys a Little Mix CD but listens to it ten times a day on Spotify and it counts towards the chart for those ten weeks. How does that compare the relative popularity of the Pet Shop Boys and Little Mix CDs?

The streaming vs. sales issue is very thorny. One key question is "what is the purpose of the chart?" Is it to:

a) reflect what people are listening to, or
b) to encourage sales of music and reflect the 'new'?

Until the addition of streaming, charts emphasized the new, as people could only buy an album or single once (crazy. multiple format / cover PSB fandom aside!). Records would tend to have a natural life cycle in the chart: the album is released, people buy it, and, after a time, the vast majority who are going to buy it have bought it, and it leaves the chart.

But look at the streaming album chart for the UK:

Many of the albums in that chart have been around for months or years, showing that people tend to stream the same albums again and again and again. With streaming and sales combined into the chart, we have a hybrid picture, which mixes both purposes. The rules about streaming in the charts are an attempt to balance these factors in the face of changing technology. If, as seems inevitable, streaming continues to grow and then dominate, the whole rationale for charts may breakdown completely.

PSB don't appear again on the Top 40 World Chart.

Looks like "Super" is going to sell less copies than "Electric" then.

You can't go by the chart positions only.

let's take one example: Nightlife - Neil has stated that it sold 1.2 million copies globally

and yet, it only sold 18k in it's first week in the UK chart, and fell off charts rapidly

the point is - albums keep selling, around the world, and that is linked to post-release marketing activity, future singles, touring, etc... for example, selling 2500 copies each week around the whole world won't show in any chart, but over a whole year it equals 120,000 copies - every year

that's how they ended up selling tens of millions of albums - the drip, drip, drip of constant sales, not obsessing over the first few weeks of the unofficial 'world chart' which means precisely nothing about an albums long-term sales

I see what you mean and I'm agree but taking a look at "Global charts" about "Fundamental" (stimated sales). You can see, it reflects good sales the two weeks it was Top 40.

Of course, "Super" is selling more than the "Global charts" are showing but I think "Electric" did better, at least taking a look the results we are watching. Anyway, tour and singles could make improve the sales of "Super" but I think PSB is taking too much time if they want to do that. At least, a second single is already necessary.

Its currently number 110 in music on Amazon in the UK (9 June) and it has been lower than that, but has started climbing again for some reason....... very much like Electric did 2-4 months after its release [and before the tours in the UK, I have to add] so, unusually for me, I am being quite upbeat about it...... it may still even surpass Electric. It has more pop appeal......

The album is definitely designed to sell tickets, and appeal to those folks who enjoyed the Electric tour.

Maybe this album is the breather in the trilogy, tour-wise. But they will definately do so for the next one.

I'm predicting these three albums are economical for them to produce, and they'll have resources for maybe a few projects and a more traditional album later. If I keep saying this, maybe it will come true

I think is going to sell much more this summer because it's a really good album for summer time.
