Decide (Burning the Heather b-side)

I wonder whether PSB considered Decide for the final track on HotSpot? It feels like the perfect climax, much as Integral was for Fundamental.

I know exactly what you mean and was feeling the same vibes! It's that oh-so-perfect-climactic-orchestral-strings bit at the end! After Effen Vida's review of "Wedding In Berlin", I feel that that track may miss the mark of a proper album closer (of course I personally have yet to fully decide until I hear it). But man, the end of Decide is everything everything everything I love about PSB. Wow.

If PSB ever decide to properly record and release those dark techno tracks from the "Super" writing sessions, these CYA chaps would be the perfect producers!

Agreed! I am SO pleased they've chosen current dancefloor relevant remixers to do this track proper justice (I'm still trying to forget the Baba Stiltz disastrous mix of "Burn"). PSB could (should?) unite with other equally compelling 'dark' producers/remixers. I could not even imagine Quivver/Bedrock/Christoph/Camelphat/Forerunners interpretations of PSB deep and dirty tracks. I'm so thrilled they've pulled in CYA this time around. Reminds me of the feelings I had when I first heard the Trouser Enthusiast mix of "Discoteca"...only to be gifted with TWO MORE Trouser Enthusiast mixes afterwards...

The more I listen to the CYA remix, the more I miss the intensity the original builds up to. The remix has a great first half but then just sort of lingers around in the second half and ends. I would have loved if the remix took its time to build up to that intensity and then even surpass it.

BUT even with my massive praise for the CYA mix, I completely agree with this too! The synth 'hook' in the original Decide, along with the euphoric strings, have been sadly removed and repurposed!! I would ideally love a CYA-inspired mix (10 minutes?) that fully builds to the original synthy/stringy orgasm of the original!

Decide is to me THE era-defining epic in the same way Axis/Vocal were for the Electric-era or the way The Pop Kids was for the SUPER-era.

I wasn't too moved/overwhelmed by "Dreamland" and although "Burning the heather" is pleasant, it doesn't have the impressive wow-factor-let-me-shout-from-the-rooftops-about-how-great-PSB-are like DECIDE does. It has defined my expectations (and hopes!) for the Hotspot era (and "An open mind" already set a high bar). Can't wait for the new tunes!

Decide is a good b side but overrated. I don't put it in the same league as integral. You have to wait for the very end to hear a few seconds of the price orchestra sound. I much prefer Burning the heather. The Cya mix is basic.
I'm not that impressed by the b-sides but Hotspot will be awesome.

Some of us have an awareness of global current events, including those in an artist's home country. "What have we done" takes this firmly out of the relationship camp IMO. It's facile to deny the Brexit meaning here. PSB have always been an overtly political group, I'm not sure why, decades later, some fans still try to avoid the obvious.

Some of us have an awareness of global current events, including those in an artist's home country. "What have we done" takes this firmly out of the relationship camp IMO. It's facile to deny the Brexit meaning here. PSB have always been an overtly political group, I'm not sure why, decades later, some fans still try to avoid the obvious.

In this regard it's probably a bit like I'm With Stupid. There's the two potential layers of meaning - personal relationship and political... but over time it becomes increasingly obvious that it's the latter which takes precedence.

I totally agree that if it wasn’t for the UK political dramas Decide could be seen as a song about a relationship. I’ve no doubt in years to come that’s exactly how it will be seen. However given Neils apparent strong feelings on the matter and the timing of the release I doubt that the lyrics of this song would ever have been written if the situation was different. I can’t wait to hear his comments on the song. Hopefully we don’t have to wait until Hotspot Further Listening!

I wasn't blown away on first listen, but it has certainly grown on me a lot. However I think there are some hypocrites among us who are quite happy to slag off Super for some songs with poor (or simplistic) lyrical content, who think this is a work of pure lyrical genius. Really?!

To my ears it's not lyrically that diverse, or can be seen as necessarily deep (it's great that it can be seen as politically motivated or a simple song of a relationship in crisis but it could equally be seen as very simply contradictory rhyming couplets with a rather maudlin theme about how we have the power to create change should we choose to), but it's hardly "My October Symphony" lyrically is it?

It just reminds me that even the most banal of lyrics can have meaningful depth (ie "Shopping, who an old acquaintance once slagged off for having no point...wow!), and that we shouldn't assume songs on Super or any other PSB album are any less important, especially to the person who wrote the lyrics in the first place.

"Decide" is definitely top stuff.

In Give it a go, if we leave the Brexit interpretation, the narrator gives the object of desire a choice between him or "someone better". In "Decide" it's time to make that choice.
