I do think there might be something in an unease about a purposefully ambiguous song being given such a singular reading.
Ha ha, it's a bit late for that!
Drico.
I thought it was interesting in Annually that although they talk about the TV show and praise Olly’s version of the song they don’t express a view on the programme itself.

Exactly.
I guess they feel far better being "Abbaficated" (as Drico expressed above) rather than playing part in
that performance.

Just to clarify, I don’t mean an unease with it being any kind of “gay anthem”, I mean an unease with the song being framed as being specifically about AIDS.

Not the homophobes feeling validated because the Boys didn't participate!

Still would have been cool to have Neil and Chris in the background merely as keyboard players

What kind of contractual issue would prevent you appearing on the same stage as someone? How bizarre.

“A contractual issue that was non-resolvable”
Chris couldn’t be arsed.

I do hope you don’t mean me. That’s not where I am coming from at all.

This is the band that performed Paninaro '95 with oiled muscle boys on Top of the Pops, were labeled "too gay" for the ITV National Lottery Show after New York City Boy's BBC performance, opened a charity show with a song called "Homosexuality", and dedicated the Winner video to transgender rollergirls.
I'm really not convinced they'd be "uneasy" about any "singular reading" of a 34 year-old song.
Drico.

They know the balance. They know some homophobes around here might stop buying their stuff if they went too far
Unlike the 4 transient songs you mentioned,
It's a sin is one of the fundamental stones classic PSB fandom rests on. They won't disturb it.

I’m not talking about any unease about it being an expression of sexuality. I mean it being framed as a song about AIDS. But I am guessing, speculating, that’s all. I’m not trying to land any kind of point.

Some people just can’t help themselves. I blocked said individual months ago so I don’t have to read it.
Anyway:
They were asked to appear
They probably were up for appearing
They eventually decided not to appear
Fuss about nowt.

It's the second time Elton has performed It's a Sin in public to a PSB backing track. There's was the Equality Show where he had dancers dressed as Scouts cavorting on stage at the Royal Albert Hall. It was probably his idea of harmless camp fun, but it wasn't a great Elton moment to say the least.

The new PSB track: “Playing a part in that performance.”
