I havent run into a problem either. but its starting to show for some police officers needing to learn spanish in cetain areas. while that may seem like no big thing.....a little thing like that, shows a problem for down the road.

we have become so accustomed to being accomdating and not expecting people to need to learn english that some aspects of society are needing to learn thiers.

Cultures change over time. We do expect people to learn English and you yourself admit you've never run into a situation where it's been a problem. I haven't either, and I'm surrounded by immigrants on a daily basis. When prime time television is made in Spanish you'll know the times have changed, but right now it's just a bunch of whiny white people being lazy and scared as far as I can see.

How exactly is it being trodden into the gutter?

I imagine the millions of white chavs get a pass, meanwhile.
They certainly don't. Those scumbags are one of the reasons we're going to the dogs, and they can't be properly dealt with to avoid upsetting the PC brigade. Failure of immigrants to assimilate is another. There is no sole reason, but they are two of the biggest examples. They are the groups that are being bowed down to, and the chavs especially, are the ones treading us into the gutter.

Can you explain this failure with specific examples?

12 years ago, my Ireland-born dad invited a young Guatamelan guy he met in a restaurant to come work with him in his window-cleaning business in the Hamptons.

12 years later, Heladio is an indispensable part of my Dad's business. He works 2 other jobs as well, but in my Dad's seasonal business he is indispensable. Smart and capable, he's spent what little free time he's had taking classes in English and computers and doing everything properly. He's become part of our family. He's actually a legal immigrant. He says. But that doesn't matter among the stupid, there are certain whites on Long Island who watch a lot of FOX and seem not to have jobs who picket about "illegals", who'd probably call him a "Mexican" . Dicks.

I have never met a person as hard-working and fine as Ladio. His own dad was murdered in Guatamala when he was a kid, and he has a bond with my own Dad. This is a fine person, a guy who deserves a chance, and I'm very grateful my Dad took a chance on 'Ladio. This community would die without people like him. But by the 7-11 I see unemployed white guys holding up hateful signs about the immigrants "taking" the shit jobs the themselves are clearly too good for.

sure your dad likes him....cause if americans can choose to pay pedro the pool boy and ladio the guatamelan wonderboy sweatshop wages of course there is happiness.

and before you get too down on the white people standing in front of the 7-11 maybe your dad could have gave them a shot....but then he'd know he might have to pony up some fair pay.

after all this is the heart of the matter. your complaining about whiteys view of immigrants yet your own father and many other american busines owners are essencially utilizing slave labor. an then fawning over the poor subjects like king edward in his magnanimous glory

So what you're saying is you're not in favor of free market economics...

Thank You Deschanel for your story.
It's exactly what my point has been.
Immigrants aren't less capable than anyone else.
Seems like 'Ladio (Heladio) did exactly what would have been expected of him in his country of origin.
He used his intelligence, furthered his education, works hard and gives back to society.

Again, I believe it's our duty to help immigrants.
I believe that cultural diversity is something that truly sets the U.S. apart from many other countries.
Though we do live in the U.S. and regardless of our backgrounds all residents are responsible for making our country a better place.

What a joke - I think you GlennRidge are the one who spoils for a fight - if I have to read such racist drivel as there is on this thread I'm very pleased to have Patrick's sane comments to leaven the going ... thanks Patrick for being prepared to take on these idiots

Chav is a term that the bourgeois media uses to label and stereotype working class - usually white - people.
