I think once you've listened to it a few times and got over the "humour" of it, there isn't an awful lot to the song.

I like it in some ways, but it's not up there with their best work.

This for me just generates a whole bunch of unpleasant thoughts. That last line still creeps up on me when I least expect it

Just seeing those lyrics written down has made me realise that I don't know the words to most of the songs on Release. I am sure I could sing all the other albums from start to finish. (Fear not though, I wouldn't inflict that on anyone).

Every now and again I think I will listen to Release, but I never do. I just can't get excited about it.

I did listen to it the other day; just to re-evaluate my position on the whole thing.

I thought it was growing on me until I hit the last two tracks. "The Night I Fell In Love" made my toes curl. Yup Release is poor IMO.

I dont hate release but I do think a few of the tracks sound very much a like...
there was so much promotion done for the album though werent there!

I hate EMAIL nearly as much as I hate SAIL AWAY and IF LOVE WERE ALL!

I would rather listen to SNOOP and Justin than these 3 songs all day!!!

I like Neil´s voice in the song. But othervise not one of my favourites. Maybe too slow song for me. I like fatser PSB-songs like Sexy Northener.

It's a bit crap, that tune innit?

yeah but thats the demo, I as talking about the backing track that was used on the CTH cast CD that has one of the actors singing. the demo version with neil while cool, is really very rough.

The songs does sound quite out of context on 'Release' as the general mood of the album is quite serious.

However, melodically it's one of the best tunes of the album.

It's mostly a case of misunderstood lyrics. The idea was to make a biting satire about Eminem, based on the well-known perception that the worst homophobes are actually oppressed homosexuals. They might consider him a skilled rapper, but it's a very anti-Eminem song obviously, a teaser against him.

I think Neil has described it in an interview as "a horrible story made to sound tender" or something along these lines. It does not endorse nor beautifies underage sex, gay groupies etc. in the same way that "Opportunities" wasn't prettifying the selfness and cynicism of the Reagan/Thatcher-era politics, but satirized them. Being sung in first person, it can be misinterpreted easily, but it's obvious that the song's protagonist is a naive young fan.

My favourite line is "he spoke sooo poliiitelyyyy"...

Along with Love Is A Catastrophe it is in my opinon best on Release but no where near good enough for single status more of a hidden gem thing.

I think it was a great move to include The Night I Fell In Love on Release. My reasoning being that it was and still is that bad, N&C will always be reminded of their appalling judgement and will never make that mistake again.

Going back to the actual album (again) I don't think it's that bad. The problem with it IMO is that most of the songs are just o.k and no more.
'Here' threatens to be good, as does Home and Dry and I Get Along. It's an album they needed to do, even though it didn't quite work.

Release is okay but if you're in that kind of mood, you may as well listen to Behaviour instead.

My thoughts exactly ! I've got it several
times in my collection, just for the sake
of it, and I never listen to it. I just can't
take any pleasure in it. It was not really
electronic music (except from TSIA), ne-
ver liked its guitar sound, it wasn't pop
at all and for me - for heaven's sake - it
wasn't the Pet Shop Boys !

Personally, I find it rather lame and imo
it's their worst release ever so far. I've
been disappointed about it. Neverthe-
less I've bought it (several times), just
for the 'protocol' so to say. Their next al-
bum, Disco 3, has been played alot here.
I was so glad about it after 'Release'.

So obviously, I don't like 'Release' songs
much and from this it follows that I don't
like TNIFIL much also ...

For me it was the word 'school' too which
I stumbled about.
