I will never get this. My Robot Friend records a crap song with incredibly cringeworthy lyrics. In what I assume to be a selfironic move, PSB decide to cover it, but despite improvements to the original, itøs still cringeworthy. Then for some reason, Robbie Williams, the biggest popstar on the planet, decides to cover this instead of any of the dozens of PSB classics around. Go figure. I do think each new version has improved on the previous version, but it's still not a very good song.

Even though I think it's really odd that he covered is, his version is the best.

I think you summed it up in your first sentence. You just don't get it. It's a fantastic song.

The official version is a b-side to Miracles, in fact. Flamboyant's only bonus track is I Didn't Get Where I Am Today.
oh thats right i always get them mixed up.
i would still like to know where the demo is from

Frankly I had no idea that this was not a PSB-penned song. Learn something everyday!

Agree. The verse lyrics are nonsense, but it's a very evocative and an original tribute that captures the allure of PSB perfectly. The PSB version is an improvement on the original, because it's far better sounding and because they really are the Pet Shop Boys. The Robbie version is superfluous, but if it makes even some Williams fans ponder who exactly are Pet Shop Boys and should they investigate further, it has done its task.
One of PSB's top 5 b-sides in my books.

Come on. He sang in Take That before, but now he is solo.

No, you're thinking of Mark Owen.

It makes a lot of sense. Now, I don't know why My Robot Friend would make it, but PSB would obviously want a part of it because at this low commercial point in their careers, they'll exploit anything that expresses interest in them. This also explains Robbie Williams, whose fondness for the PSB allowed them to appear twice on his new album. She's Madonna probably came first, and We're the Pet Shop Boys kind of made sense, as if there was a conversation taking place with the song titles. But aside from just the titles coinciding nicely, rather than covering a song that's been on an album before, this song has been heard only by die-hard PSB fans and MRF fans, aka nobody. So it gives a good song exposure. And putting the band name in the title means everyone who buys the record will know the PSB were involved, which quite frankly, was the whole point for the tandem; shameless plugging.

Now I have Pet Shop Boys own version too and it's so very nice.
