Janet Street-Porter wrote:Absolutely fabulous still remains a total mystery to me. It was as though they were drawing a line under their consistent brilliance and admitting that they couldn't keep up the standard for ever so here's a dodgy 'comedy/charity' record. We'll disappoint you before you get disappointed.

It was also the harbinger of their showbiz years as they evolved from the effortlessly cool Discography epoch into a rather more hit-and-miss 'here's Elton, where's Neil?' cult of celebrity.
It's made even more mysterious by the fact that they did it immediately after their (arguably) best songwriting stretch: Very, Relentless and the b-sides to Can you forgive her?, Go West & I wouldn't normally do this kind of thing are an absolutely incredible bunch of songs. The spring 1994 was one of the points of their career when they needed the least to do a tacky charity single to get some attention.

I think it was just a bit of fun in the studio and not meant to be taken seriously - it's not supposed to be part of their body of work, and hense their name isn't attached to it.

Perhaps they should just have kept it as a fan club freebie, like their Christmas single.
