Is It A New Remixed Updated Version Of Integral?

First of all, I think most bands want to play the best version they have of a song when playing live. Second of it, it could function as promotion for a forthcoming single release.

On the other hand, they might reserve a new version as a surprise for the fans. But I tend to believe that will be the album version or a slightly edited version of it - not a completely remixed version. I hope that I'm wrong though.

I doubt remixing it would make that much of a difference to the commercial success of the song. I don't see why it can't be a hit as it is with proper radio play. I certainly hope they don't do an edit just to shorten the song. Most people listening to the radio have not heard the Fundamental version and will not know the song is about id cards just like I suspect most people listening to I'm with Stupid don't know it's supposed to be about Blair and Bush. Integral got a great reception both times I heard it live.

But it's very important for PSB to get first the fanbase enthusiastic about the release, because a good reaction from the fans provides a solid platform for the single. Just compare I'm With Stupid to Minimal or Numb; if the fanbase isn't interested in the single, it will have a hard time breaking the top 20, which means the chances of it catching the attention of the general public are zilch.

As for the live version, the PSB tour has not been exactly full of spontaneity, has it? I can perfectly well picture them not wanting to change the arrangement and re-learn the song for the remaining shows. Besides, a new live version would leak instantly, taking away much of the fan interest.

I don't have a very good knowledge of how the sales of singles work, but although I do think "Integral" is almost perfect in its current version, a remix is necessary. And when/if people find out it's such a great song, it would be quite a disappointment only to have one version available of it! Aren't nearly all hits released in several mixes nowadays? And especially all PSB hits!

Are fans really that interested in single remixes and edits? I'm much more enthusiastic about extended remixes, b-sides and a video. With the exception of Suburbia, where the album and single remix are good, I tend to think that album versions are better. Granted, two versions are better than one but a single remix or edit is not really what I base my decision to buy a single on. For example, I love the version of Flamboyant on PopArt and rarely listen to the single remix.
