I think you often don`t notice smaller earthquakes during the daytime because you`re out and about. Of all the many earthquakes I have felt while in Japan, most have been while I was in bed.

Funny you should say that, I distinctly remember hearing the birds outside making quite a din as the earthquake got going. At 12:58am in the morning they're usually asleep too, so they definitely knew about it too!
