whats so bad about AT&T network? I've had it since it was cingular and I've never heard any problems with it out of the ordinary that one has with any service.
no problems with dropped calls I send and recieve email and browse the internet, and my baseplan is 29.00 dollars, although my bill usually is around 80 dollars because I have the internet charge tacked on and I do go over my minutes.

Glen, is Cingular a stand alone company or part of AT&T ?glennjridge wrote:whats so bad about AT&T network? I've had it since it was cingular and I've never heard any problems with it out of the ordinary that one has with any service.
I used to do a lot of tech support for them. (Your night time was our day time).
That is how they are all intending to make money. The iPhone has a WiFi interface as wellglennjridge wrote:no problems with dropped calls I send and recieve email and browse the internet, and my baseplan is 29.00 dollars, although my bill usually is around 80 dollars because I have the internet charge tacked on and I do go over my minutes.
as the 3G connection. There are so many free WiFi hotspots around that I can have the 3G
interface turned off. So my iPhone is only $30/month. No billed data.

AT&T's mandatory service , that you have no choice but to sign up for with iPhone, is absolutely horrible, in my personal experience having iPhone for a year.
Dropped calls, crap audio quality, "can you hear me now?"- I will personally attest that AT&T's network for voice in my part of the US is truly awful. I miss Sprint.
Otherwise, it's a marvellous device, but as a phone it's fairly mediocre and spotty , at least here and on AT&T's peesashit network.

oh brother there it is. the idea of a company being mandatory and telling you how to operate whatever it is you fancy and as thus you hate it in theory.
I'm sorry you suppposedly have dropped calls, but I have never had a problem, and never heard any kind of grumbling on various reviews about them being noticeable for dropped calls any worse than any other carrier.
gregf I'm sure they did. I remember even as a teen when I worked at various department stores when they were taken over we just became the new employees.it usually seems to be the modus operandi. just a little retraining.
what was your exprience working for them if I may ask?

An iphone costs about $2000 when you take a 2-year-contract into consideration. apple believe they're so damn cleverer than the other companies when in fact all they do is out out a phone at a usurious price which in turn offers hardly more than a NOKIA smart phone apart from the touch screen. apple is all about paying extra for the cult. the same goes for their computers. there's no way they're better than high end pcs.

I hear EVERYONE talk about how their network is crap. I never had trouble when I was on Sprint but others did. Then when I switched to AT&T people hate that too. I've found I get service anywhere any other carrier is getting it. The only problems I have are in my office and it's because i'm in the center of the building, everyone around me has the same problem.
Cell phone voice calls are by definition shitty quality. They're still not nearly as clear as a land line and if you both start talking at the same time it's like a speaker phone where it cuts one party off.
Having said all that, I have the first generation iPhone and I do love it. They've fixed a lot of stuff that I didn't like with software updates and now that they've opened up the phone for outside developers there's some good stuff that's been coming. The only thing they need that they're still missing is cut & paste but I hear that's on it's way too.

Is your real name Rob Enderle? You could have a very rewarding career as a technology consultant.alig wrote:apple is all about paying extra for the cult. the same goes for their computers. there's no way they're better than high end pcs.
Macs and PCs are definitely the same, since their interfaces are exactly the same…

Excuse me Glenn, I am not the only one who thinks being tied to a single inferior provider (AT&T) without options, but with a two-year contract, is absolutely rotten. EVERYone who has an iPhone in the US thinks this, absolutely everyone.glennjridge wrote:oh brother there it is. the idea of a company being mandatory and telling you how to operate whatever it is you fancy and as thus you hate it in theory.
Free markets? Competition? Consumer choice? You're positioning yourself against these things? No, what you are doing is personally dogging me, criticizing me, for talking about a neutral topic and my own experience. Douchè.

I can see the next battle being for the mobile application space.
Things like Email, Calendar, and Notes you want synced with your phone.
I am using Google (free) tools for these. I can edit my Contacts and Notes
(like ToDo lists) on the PC then go out and it is already synced to the phone.
But the Google apps just look like web pages.
Apple has a service called MobileMe for $100/year and syncs with all the
native apps on the phone.
So this is the next big battle, whose mobile app suite.

rational people dont politicize everything. the comments about AT&T dropping your phone calls is tied to your idiosyncracy on the the fact AT&T have it so you have to go thru their service, so therefore you hate it and mysteriously also suffer supposedly from multiple dropped phone calls.Deschanel wrote:Excuse me Glenn, I am not the only one who thinks being tied to a single inferior provider (AT&T) without options, but with a two-year contract, is absolutely rotten. why should you anyone rush to you and go "awww there there" like a little baby when you actually lied about your service simply because you dont like the apple phone has to go thru them?
maybe your dropped calls arent due to bad reception but due to the people on the other end not being able to stand another minute on the line with you and hang up. look into it.

Most of the US uses a wireless protocol called CDMA.
Most of the rest of the world uses an alternative called GSM.
GSM is probably winning out.
The iPhone uses GSM (which is smart thing to do) but many
parts of the US still have poor or no GSM coverage.
It is an amusing irony that the competition in the US caused
divergent standards and a poorer service.
iPhones are only sold thru telco providers on a (usually) 2yr contract.
All business will seek a monopoly if they are given the opportunity.
That is why the success of capitalism depends on governments sometimes
making regulations.
When conservative governments lift too much regulation you get the
sub-prime mortgage situation.
