I applaud your eye for detail, but bitter experience has taught me it's important to proof read one's own posts when dishing out the pedantry, because there's usually another pedantic PSB fan lurking somewhere close by!Sandy Shaw wrote: I just seems crazy

Thanks! In the spirit of correcting things, I will have to go back and edit that post. I asked for it really . That's shocking.
And everything about tonight feels right and so young
And anything I'd want to say out loud will be sung
It's in the music...

OS today. The roll of a 'dice' has been changed from the BBC website - the roll of a 'die'.

Is it still wrong with "a dice"?Sandy Shaw wrote:OS today. The roll of a 'dice' has been changed from the BBC website - the roll of a 'die'.
I've always thought it was grammatically wrong when ABBA in "The winner takes it all" sang "the gods may throw a dice", as I had learnt that dice was the plural of a die. However when I now check dictionaries, they say that dice is also the singular form. For example Collins English Dictionary:
dice n, pl dice 1 a small cube, etc
and
die n 3 same as dice (sense 1)
Hmm, so "a dice" isn't wrong anymore, if it ever has been?

Sandy, you are to typographical standards what Alfonso is to PSB texts!

Yes I know, and it means thatGhost within this house wrote:n, pl = noun, pluralHillbilly wrote: dice n, pl dice 1 a small cube, etc
[a] dice is a noun,
and that the plural form is dice (=the same as the singular form)
Compare, from the same page:
dialysis n, pl -ses
It's you who can't interpret a dictionary correctly!
Also, from http://lexin.nada.kth.se/cgi-bin/sve-eng:
Swedish: [en] tärning (singular) =Svenskt uppslagsord
tärning tärningen tärningar subst.
liten kub (med prickar från ett till sex för vissa spel) (även om andra föremål med samma form)
Engelsk översättning
dice
English: [one] dice
Is that wrong too?

Re: The Boys need a better proofreader!
"dice" has pretty much taken over from "die" for the singular, although both can be used (at least here in the US), unless you are using the phrase "the die is cast"

Both are used, but one is correct and the other is incorrect.boyjohn wrote:"dice" has pretty much taken over from "die" for the singular, although both can be used (at least here in the US), unless you are using the phrase "the die is cast"
The phrase 'the die is cast' simply harks back to a time when people spoke correctly.

Re: The Boys need a better proofreader!
As time goes by, languages change. This is just one of those things happening, and once a population has started using words in a certain way it is hard to revert back to the "correct" way.
Here is a definition from the Columbia Guide to Standard English
Dice is the plural, die is one singular, and dice is also a Standard singular form. A pair of dice usually takes a singular verb. We keep the singular die primarily in the cliché “The die is cast,” and in tool and die (the plural of which is dies) work.
