Re: Stephen Fry on Catholicism
no. I'm saying the religion isnt having sex with young guys. the men are.
Re: Stephen Fry on Catholicism
The criticism from Stephen Fry was mostly against the organization that is the catholic church, and how its whole structure and way of handeling things has made it possible for the crimes to continue for ages. Of course the question is where to draw the line beetween the religion and the church when its dogms like celibacy among priests is partly to blame...glennjridge wrote:no. Re: Stephen Fry on Catholicism
blaming this on celibacy is like framing the wrong guy for a crime.
it implies if the church just allowed these priests to have sex they wouldnt go after young guys they come into contact with in their dutys. what, they would straighten up and fly right with wives instead?no they want to have fast love with some young guys.
that frankenstein looking dude in the video is being politically correct and blaming "catholicism" the entity rather than adressing something deep, something at the core of this problem because he is being politically correct despite trying to be controversial.
for some reason, the church is being infiltrated on a mass scale by a certain type of male who are attracted to the hint of a sexual mens only club enviroment with othr men...and while they are there take advantage of the younger guys who they come into contact with.

Re: Stephen Fry on Catholicism
..and the reason is obviously = celibacy. It's been providing gay men, especially in less tolerant times and societys, a valid reason to not show any intrest towards the opposite sex, a powerful position in society and be respect by people around, no questions asked... Why else would you think this problem is much bigger inside the catholic church than elsewhere in the religious world?glennjridge wrote:blaming this on celibacy is like framing the wrong guy for a crime.

Re: Stephen Fry on Catholicism
I dont find this issue to be complicated. gay men are attracted to the priesthood for the same reason they went to the gay bath houses that were popular in the past.
its essencially a mens only club that contains an element of secrecy for doing what they want.
personally I think its exactly the way satan would try to discredit the faith. destroy it from within.
via the people that scripture speaks out against.
it has a sort of demonic irony.

So what do you think about the future, will the storm settle and everything go back to normal, or will the opinions of Stephen Fry really start spreading and to what consequences..? No more catholicism in 2020? Would you still feel there wasn't ever anything wrong with its traditions and dogmas...? Just curious...

I dont know. I do know john lennon said christianity will dissapear soon in his day.so many self appointed enlightened people say stuff. it just a form of anger. you dont like something on a philsophical basis and you say its irrelevant and its dying.
I dont know whats right or wrong with its traditions or dogmas as jesus himself said to peter that
Matt 16:19 “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.".
what the church decides thru the centurys is what they decide as they were given the ability to do so.I have no problms with what they decide, I do have a problem with the men who protect others who abuse innocent people.

Re: Stephen Fry on Catholicism
like I said, thats said all the time. pointless. religion is never static anyways. it goes up and down.
but as far as britain, that means nothing anymore than if someone told me it was dying out in haiti.
ho hum.

Re: Stephen Fry on Catholicism
What pisses me off about the way that the Catholic Church has been slagged off recently is that most priests are good people, and by and large, so is the institution itself. Who are we meant to respect instead? Stephen Fry? I just don't think that secular societies offer much moral guidance, and amorality is only ever nihilistic.
Re: Stephen Fry on Catholicism
I've no time for the Catholic Church - it's always been about self-preservation and has consequently almost without exception sided with corrupt despots and the prevailing power no matter how immoral that power has proven to be. Franco and Pinochet, for example, were among their best pals.
However, there is undoubtedly a touch of sectarian glee in some of the criticism of the Catholic Church in the UK. The Anglican Church, for example, is in no position to feel itself in any way superior. They're simply a less successful version of the "real thing."
Religion, of all hues, is simply a control mechanism beloved of the powerful to keep the masses in check. "Faith" is its greatest confidence trick. What better way to control the plebs than to comfort them with soft talk of a better time in "the next life." If the peasants believe they will "inherit the Earth", they'll think twice about revolution in this one. It's a Santa Claus job. If you're a bad boy in this life, you'll go to Hell. But if you're good...

Re: Stephen Fry on Catholicism
I never believed that invented to control the masses thing simply because there was no immediate pay off for the people at the starting point of the religions if that was their aim.I'd believe it was indoctrination by iirrational superstition before I believed it was some kind of ingenious controlling the masses thing.
they hardly caught on in their day,and yet once the ball has been rolling for centurys sure people can scam others all in the name of God and heaven but that really wasnt a luxury for the people at the start.
take peter the apostle. nailed upside down. he should have stuck to fishing. but he didnt.

well, santa like the easter bunny are beings who are knowingly accepted as being contrived for a certain purpose with there being knowlege that there is an expiration date to the particular scam.
usually right about the time at a certain age you catch your parents drunk in the living room stumbling around as they wrap presents.

Re: Stephen Fry on Catholicism
Exactly. In this case, that purpose is control and that expiry date usually arrives when an intelligent person starts to think for themselves.glennjridge wrote:well, santa like the easter bunny are beings who are knowingly accepted as being contrived for a certain purpose with there being knowlege that there is an expiration date to the particular scam.
I'm afraid, there are always some kids who have to be told that fat Santa can't really get down that tight chimney...
