I actually preferred when they did big pretentious singles like "If You Tolerate This..." and "Everything Must Go".

"No Surface All Feeling" should have been a single.

They have had a lot of good album tracks... in addition to those mentioned above, I'd like to throw Sleepflower, the opening track from Gold Against The Soul into the mix.

I liked that Britpop book he did. To be honest I don't mind him because he is a genuine Northerner rather than the usual Islington Guardianista although he's obviously positively Pythonesque in his proletyzing about proles.

John Harris is obsessed with a lot of MOR rock though. And yeah, some of his style, faux miserablism is rather comical.

Anyway I made a Manic Street Preachers comp yesterday. It was actually difficult to put everything on one CD. Loads to choose from, 1985, Dead trees and traffic islands, from despair to where, The love of richard nixon, Elvis Impersonator, Faster, There by the grace of god, comfort comes, Everything must go, Prologue to History (should have been a single)... I have a soft spot for Always/Never, Epicentre ( the outro bit. 'Happy birthday, this is the summer') and tons of their tracks really. Lost interest after Lifeblood. I think 'Your Love is Not Enough' is their worst single, really whimsical and humpty dumpty-esque and Wire's singing voice is painful.

I was just seeing how the album did assuming that it would have gone in at number one. I was pretty surprised that it only got to number ten. The single reached number 154.

Despite an occasional foray into the larger consciousness, MSP are yet again back at the fan base band ghetto. Their compilations are very much bought by the same people who already have all the studio albums.

As for the single, it was released only as a digital download (with a new b-side though), so the Manics have also given up the format game in order to break the charts.

They have far more in common with the boys than you might think.
