Oh yes. I prefer Technique and Low-Life but Republic is #3 in my New Order albums list. Regret is one of their best singles ever and the rest of the album is a solid listen -- I don't think there is a weak song on it, which is something of a miracle considering that we're talking about New Order.

I think "Substance" is a far better compilation. Amazing 12" extended mixes all around.

But it doesn't have the Republic or Technique singles, so you miss out on their transformation into an edgy pop group.

As much as that's true...

- The Perfect Kiss doesn't make sense unless it goes for 10 minutes and has frog sounds
- The Shep Pettibone 12" of Bizarre Love Triangle is clearly the definitive mix
- The original of Blue Monday beats any subsequent remake
- Substance has the best available versions of Subculture, Temptation, Ceremony, Confusion and Everything Gone Green on it. All of which are entirely absent, in any form, on the 1994 compilation.

Yes, but it's a compilation album - not a definitive collection of mixes. It's designed as an introduction to their work for people who might, if the mood takes, go and delve into the catalogue.

It's for people who might have bought Too Young To Die by Saint Etienne or Discography. On those terms, it's a great album.

Unfortunately not. I think it's down to Hooky being a giant t*** about it. I was really looking forward to hearing it, too, because Waiting for the Sirens Call was such a crap album. I wanted to hear for myself if it could've been any worse. That reminds me: Petheads can complain all they want about how the new material isn't as good as their early stuff, but they've never had a chasm separating their best album from their worst album half as wide as the one that separates Technique or Republic from Waiting for the Sirens Call or Violator from Sounds of the Universe.

I get it... Substance is to Discography and Too Young To Die, what The Best Of is to Ultimate and Travel Edition.

Yep, Hooky is responsible for putting a stop to Lost Sirens, but one could argue that New Order started this dispute by refusing him to release a newly recorded version of a lost unrecorded Joy Division song. Hellbent from the "Lost Sirens" was already released a year ago on one new NO collection and that was better than most of the stuff on WFTSC.

Hellbent was quite good.
