My brother went through one after 10 years and while there were problems, they went for couple's counselling and things seemed smoother, but then his wife in the end pushed for it and in the state of Georgia(USA), you get a divorce within a month !
It was pretty clean, cause they had no kids and jointly divided proceed from the house sale and joint accounts. My bro really felt hit hard..esp because he was completely in love with her and always believed that it wouldnt come to this.
After a month of mopping around, he went back to the things he neglected..like tennis, creative writing, being part of an amateur play group, community service and on one such occassion met a wonderful girl (who had divorced after 7 years of her marriage), they got married a couple of years back and now have two great kids. My ex sis in law, has moved on too and moved to a diff city remarried and has her own family.
Guess the one aspect he laments now and then, was the years wasted trying to fix something broken, also at 50 he is a father of two young kids and finds that a huge challenge too...but in the end, he is in a much happier space than ever
I firmly believe there is always a silver lining/opportunity in any seemingly -ve situation
