A lot of people don't like nightlife. I think it's a really good album. They should work with rollo again

The problem with Nightlife is that they were writing the musical at the same time. Something like In denial is just so schmaltzy and overly theatrical that it doesn't work in the context of pop - it clearly belongs in a musical. So, you have the greatest pop group of the late 80s releasing showtunes like Somewhere and then Nightlife at the same time that their style of music is no longer fashionable - a perfect storm.symco wrote: Tue 19 Aug 2025, 1:56 pm A lot of people don't like nightlife. The first and third singles are nice enough but New York city boy can only exist as a pastiche of better disco records from the 1970s. It's the Pet Shop Boys on Stars in Their Eyes, transforming before our eyes into kitsch like that time Chris de Burgh appeared alongside ersatz Chris de Burgh. It's all rather tragic but at least they look the part as they enter the dumper.
