I think that Fundamental was a missed opportunity for an over-the-top production as it was not their best songwritting period and the production didn’t make any improvement on the songs, to be honest.
They should co-produce with someone different and get a more risky approach if they want to release another studio album. I’m still waiting for the “dark-techno album” mentioned some time ago…

From my point of view, Fundamental is quite boring because of the number of ballads and the lenghf of them but it also has the most powerful singles potential since Introspective.
With this single choice, the album had been successful:
1 - The Sodom and Gormorrah Show
2 - Integral (studio version) - prior the album
3 - I'm with Stupid
4 - Minimal
Some people suggested Trevor Horn didn't work on it too much, listening the demo versiions.
Anyway, Integral is an one of the best songs from Pet Shop Boys of all time and that's because Trevor Horn took part of it.

Been thinking a lot about Trevor these days, especially because he just made his debut on social media and because "All The Things She Said" is a viral hit again now. The few productions I've heard from him from the 2010s onwards don't seem to have his magical touch of yore. That being said, many artists come to him with material that was already top-notch to begin with (as was the case of Fundamental, which I love and to which he gave some great final touches with the strings and instrumentation), so if PSB came up to him for a new album, it can't result in anything but great.

For me, with this album, they reached another level with their ballads. Of course there were some on nightlife or release but on fundamental it was more beautiful and catchy. The only song i was not totally fond of was Tsags, but songs like luna park, indefinite leave to remains, twentieth century and the others were gorgeous, way more sophisticated than the ones on nightlife.

When I find myself seeking out the name of an unknown producer on a record I love, I find that two familiar names in particular crop up to amaze me: Stephen Hague and Trevor Horn.
The amount of singles that I love that have been produced by these guys - unbeknownst to me at the time - is staggering.
In Hague's case, early Dubstar, Banderas's This Is Your Life, and A-ha's Lifelines among loads of others that I did know about. In Horn's, the peerless Jacky by Marc Almond (and half of that album).
They leave their sonic leitmotifs on so many of the records they produce - and these are, for me, anyway, key strands in the very sound of pop.

This is something I've found with a few PSB producers - in particular, a disproportionate number of the records I've loved in the last two or three years (Pulp, Blur, Gorillaz, Jessie Ware, Depeche) have turned out to be produced by James Ford. They pick em well.
On Hague, over the years, I'd massively agree - New, Dubstar, James, OMD, Sarah Cracknell, Erasure, even the Manics, he seems to have had a hand in just about everything I grew up on - I was particularly surprised when I noticed his name on To The End by Blur!
