A not very bright, Tory-voting, fake tan-wearing, label-obsessed, ITV2-watching prole.

Think Girls Aloud.
By that measure then the PSBs musty be chavs since they fulfill at least 4 of those criteria.

I can't see chavs voting Tory, to be honest. The Tories are the ones most likely to do something about the pieces of shit.

Of course chavs vote Tory. They owe their very existence to Thatcherite economics. Once the working class ceased to represent anything but a group of selfish, individualistic consumers, the threat of socialism in Britain disappeared and that's why you get the betrayal of the miners by the proletariat, and ultimately New Labour.

Chav culture is predicated on nothing but money and getting what they assume they deserve, whether that be their council house (which they proceed to flog for an exhorbitant price), their heavily-customised car or their membership of the Jade Goody Fan Club. They're natural Tories.

I see your point, but aren't these the same people whose parents blame Thatcher for destroying industry and their jobs? Most chavs weren't even born when Thatcher was in power, and if they are all like Goody was, then probably don't even know who she was.

But the point is that they vote Tory and/or new Labour. It doesn't matter anymore because they just care about paying less tax. Ergo they'll vote Tory at the next election.

Will the Tories allow them to sponge as much as Labour, though?

It was Thatcher's policies, indeed her legacy, that have created the me me me attitude that you say is so prevalent amongst 'chavs' as you describe them.

Actually, Patrick Bateman, you are right, and I'm going to concede defeat - after reading this comment on my friend's Facebook page earlier:

"£66!! I get up at 7 in the mornin, slave for 12 hours straight and now im off school for two days partly with a bad back and all that french bastard gives me is 66 pounds! f*** arse! Thts age discrimination! X"

I commented:
"That's £5.50 an hour. Pretty damned good for someone who is still at school and not even entitled to minimum wage. (£3.53 if you are out of school and aged 16-18, btw.) It's called work honey, get over it!"

Not even left school and she thinks the world owes her a living. Jumped-up little madam. I bet her Mum still wipes her f*** arse for her!

The American counterpart to "Chav" would be "Guido". At least in NY- though I regret that it stereotypes Italians, it's pretty close to the US equivalent of Chavs. It means flashy, blingy, but pretty low-class.

(But Italian-Americans are still sexier than pasty British Chavs. )

Oh dear ; I am getting out of touch.

The older I get the more I am drawn back to the wisdom of one of the great American novels,
To Kill A Mockingbird, a book and movie I first consumed a long time ago.

For me the key is the power struggle of the court case. The conservative power elite
must stir up racism and encourage ignorance to say in power. The unholy alliance of
the very rich and very stupid. And now we have a new generation. Where did the 60's go.
