I find it interesting that PSB themselves didn't say anything about the performance or link to it, but I have an idea what this might all be about.
Everyone who has appeared on the Brits this year has produced Instagram videos and other social media content, appeared on the red carpet, and made a big thing of it. I wonder if the Pets wanted to fly in and do the song, then nothing else. It might be that the Brits contract is all about doing loads of promotion and making social media content and thanking the sponsors... all stuff the Pets would absolutely refuse to do.
Their non promotion of the performance could well be a sulk following the contract not being able to be agreed.

Personally I think it’s down to record labels. Perhaps the boys are fine with it all and to do the performance. As soon as the performance becomes available as a download single then perhaps Parlophone stick their financial hands up wanting a piece and x2 can’t come to an agreement. Best situation? Stay just as producers and writers and don’t become the “act”.
I agree with this and think it's the mostly likely issue. I imagine EMI/Parlophone would need be involved if the track appeared as Elton, Y&Y *and* PSB.

Another article here, I think it hasn't been shared in this thread. If that's not the case, my apologies and feel free to ban me forever.

I suppose this might also ring true to an extent. PSB have already had experience of contracts with the Brit Awards. Presumably after their outstanding contribution (or whatever it was) they had a contact that meant they needed to do that weird living room gig for Mastercard.

Royalties, record labels.. How does the "It’s a sin 1989" post fit in with those?

It's just speculation and I have not doubt about the contractual issues problems could be the main reason why PSB were not on stage. The title from the pet text says "it's a sad, sad situation", of course they wanted to be there.
But it could be possible they were not 100 % agree about the perspective of the performance.

Maybe Neil wanted to wear a red cape and twirl into infinity again? Maybe the Brits committee considered that too gay? I think we will never get a real answer.

From The Mirror:
A BRITs spokesperson told the Mirror: "The collaboration between Elton John and Olly Alexander was always the original concept and came about after Olly appeared on Elton’s Rocket Hour show to talk about his role in the groundbreaking drama It's A Sin. There was then an invitation from Elton directly to the Pet Shop Boys to see how they might want to get involved.
Elton and Olly were delighted when they agreed to produce the music alongside Stuart Price. The Pet Shop Boys’ production teams also supported and contributed to the staging and physical production every step of the way.
"The response to the performance has been phenomenal and the single is raising money for the Elton John Aids Foundation, such an important cause. It was a special BRIT performance people will be talking about for years.

They have said they approved everything as regards the show, and they co-produced the music. It'll be about the download.
How does the "It’s a sin 1989" post fit in with those?
You can't buy anything from that gig, can you? No music download, no DVD. It's mentioned in the new Annually that discussion are on going to try and change that. The YouTube clip shared isn't official.

Highlights VHS, LD. Welcome to 1989
But I don't get the point. Why not being able to buy anything from that gig makes it sensible to refer to it now, in the context of the Elton/Olly performance?

And just in case we needed reminding what It’s a Sin is really about…
Be easier to be reminded if the bloody thing was released on dvd!
Well according to Annually ‘discussions about its prospective release remain ongoing’
So this is positive news about MCMLXXXIX finally getting a full DVD release. The key words there are ‘prospective release’ - prospective meaning planned, future release!! Fingers crossed. One great thing about the lockdown is that it has afforded Neil and Chris the time to take a look in the archives and finally spend time on getting this stuff released. This is the best hope we have yet of MCMLXXXIX being released on DVD

I have that VHS. It's still good. Let's hope all of it features as extras on any live DVD. You can't buy anything from that tour right now though, can you? The point is, they can share what they want. There might have been contractual reasons that them appearing as part of the performance this week would have complicated the (immediate) download release.

Great name for a remix album as well.
