Track-by-Track: From Please to Nonetheless

#1831 Post by Drico One »

Radiophonic would have made a brilliant single if it cut a verse and made more of the euphoric “I think I’m in love” rush.

As it is, the dud sub-sonic beat box wordiness gets in the way, pleasing as it is.

The epitome of an album track, and the latter half where it goes mental is of course utterly brilliant. But it's missing that certain something that makes it a single. Or even memorable, to be frank. But every once in a while I listen to Nightlife and rediscover how great the second half of the track is.

oh yeah like this one. Not quite as good as the first 3 tracks, and prefer the demo version, but along with Drunk and the first 3, it's the ones I listen to from the album. Lacks a little bit of oomph maybe, agree probably a bit wordy. But a nice track

Track 117: The Only One
Chronology: Nightlife, Track 8

Another beautiful song produced by Craig Armstrong that he thought should be the first single from Nightlife. It ultimately wasn't included in the musical. Not to be confused with "You're the One" from Hotspot.

The worst thing they ever made, imho. I really don't like it.

Worst album track untill W in Berlin came along. Melodi is bad but the lyrics suck big time.

Average album track, not too good and not too bad. Easy listening and moody.

My Nightlife EP track listing:

For your own good
Closer to Heaven
I don’t know what you want but I can’t give it any more
You only tell me you love me when you’re drunk
Radiophonic
Shot in the fatal cause 'of frock-and-droll'

I heard it the other day on Pets radio and let's just say I wasn't horrified. What really horrifies me is when I have to hear it in the album's tracklist. It's like... What the hell is this doing here? Lowest level of their albums

That Armstrong believed whaaaaat.   ... That's so incomprehensible that my mind refuses to accept that it could be true

I have a playlist for Nightlife where I moved Radophonic to track one and forgot (ahem) to include For Your Own Good (possibly for my own good). To the point - does The Only One sound better when it's not following a Rollo production number. There's an obvious degree of hypothesising in this and incontrovertibly it does follow Radipohonic on the album.

Yes, this is the track that sinks Nightlife to the bottom, it's the track that makes us think that Nightlife is one of their worst album. It's the track that infects the rest of the album.

Ha ha..! Loving this late 90’s topic of conversation. I actually quite like this track, a lot, and “Nightlife” is probably in my Top 4 PSB albums..!
More strobes and BANGING, please!
